If you could get it repaired for under $500, I'd do that instead.

I've already looked into it. Pioneer doesn't support it anymore and it seems like the repair component channel has dried up. The intermittent shut off and non-boot issue was traced back to a malfunctioning power distribution module which isn't available. The input problem can be fixed for ~$300 but that isn't my primary concern.

That sux bro, your best bet is the 8000 series plasma from scammy Sammy, or the GT series from Panasonic. Do not consider a Dull, er Sharp load of crap TV under any circumstance, unless it's free, but even then I'd trade a free Sharp TV for a $50 gas card. They're so terrible.

From what I can tell your best best will be a Panny VT30 like you already mentioned. Either that or you are stuck repairing your Kuro (if possible) or buying a used one. Not the greatest options but it's kind of hard to replace a Kuro.

If you want a tv since you currently have an elite i would look at what panny has to offer. But for me it's HD Projector or go home . but then again i like the 100" screen at 7 feet
