My System Specs

Default Which 27-30" IPS LCD?

So I'm thinking about buying a better quality LCD around Christmas this year. Wondering what you guys would suggest?

My main contenders are the Dell U2711/U3011 and HP ZR30w (can't find in Canada?). There's also Apple's 27" LED but not sure if it would be the best choice to use with a PC.

I know the U2711 had some initial problems, but I'm assuming those should be sorted out by now. Haven't looked too extensively into the U3011/ZR30w though.

I currently have a 27" Acer that's TN-based. Resolution wise it's fine (2048x1152), but it seems to have some flicker to it once I turn the brightness down to an acceptable level. Colours don't seem that terrible, but orange/yellow kind of meld together.

Don't really want dual monitors though as I'd hate having a bezel in-between screens when playing games or watching movies.

And of course, I'm trying to avoid paying full price for anything ;) Hopefully find a sale on something around the holiday season.

I think charlie is right on the spot. Dell are probably the best out here for that kind of screen. You can also wait for them to put these on sale which happen pretty often. Maybe get a 150$ rebate if you can wait a bit.

I would have suggested the Apple 27" due to its panel and LED backliting, however it follows DisplayPort specifications to the teeth. The HD5870 does not and will not work with it.

The U2711 at the for sale price looks like a great buy. The panel is fantastic and gaming @ 2560x1440 is rather enjoyable.

Wait wait wait. I don't understand why would the 5870 not work with it?the DP on a 5870 is not a full DP or it's something else?

I'm curious as to that too... that's a major let down if ATI messed up DP implementation...

And yes I knew about Compu2000's sale, which is what perked my interest and thus this post ;) It's tempting for sure, but I'm not sure if I want a lateral move in size, or step it up to a 30". I suppose I'd still gain some resolution though.

Kind of like the "no frills" approach of the HP, so that it has less input lag, but the price doesn't really seem worth it. And I doubt I'd find a sale on that anytime soon. At least with Dell the chances of finding a better price are quite likely.

I hate making expensive decisions

although Dell often seems to have quality control issues to iron out at launch, many issues that people complain about regarding consumer IPS displays are par for the course imo; uniformity, for example. I think expectations are generally too high.

personally, I can't live without IPS or PVA -- really, I'd drop dead with a TN panel day in, day out. color depth is worth some uniformity issues only observable a black background. some details simply aren't visible on a TN.

I like TFT Central - LCD Monitor Information, Reviews, Guides and News for display reviews.

:
All of the 5-series launch cards (HD5770, HD5850, HD5870, etc) did not follow DisplayPort specifications completely. They'll work with most displays but not with Apple. Everything after the HD5970 works (HD5870 Eyefinity 6, 6-series, etc.) follow the DisplayPort specifications more completely and work properly with Apple displays.
