Default Two 22" vs. One 24" Monitor?

I need to buy a monitor (or two) for the desktop I'm building and I'm trying to decide whether I should get one large 24" monitor or two slightly smaller monitors.

My budget's only about $250-300 max, unfortunately, so I'll be getting TN panel.

For the 24" monitor, I have been considering the Dell ST2410:

And I haven't really found a 22 one I like yet.

I use my computer for a variety of things: programming, gaming, Inventor, and 3ds max. I've never really used dual-screens, so I'm looking for advice. What do you guys think?

Get a 22 or 24 for your primary and a smaller one for your secondary. I have a 24inch as my primary and a 19inch in portrait mode for my second monitor. I really like this combination and it take up less space than two 22inch would.

I would definitively get a nice 24in monitor that way it should last you longer before you find you need to get bigger. I was using an old 19in CRT monitor and I thought wow, going for 24in is really pushing it, but I did. I don't regret it one bit, but I wonder if I should have gone for bigger.
As for your budget, my gf is getting herself an Asus VW266h, its 25.5in and when we went to see it in real, it looked good and it is 289.99 before 30$ MIR which might be able to fit in your budget. Will see when she gets it how it really is tho.

Otherwise a nice IPS such as the Dell 2209WA when its on special can be a compromise as a single 22in monitor.

It just so happens I have both a 24" display (1920x1200) and a pair of 22" (1920x1080) displays. I also do CAD, CGI, and web design work as well as playing the odd game now and then. For that I prefer the dual display set up. I have the two 22" screens mounted to a single dual display mount (Chief) purchased thru Dell. It takes up less desktop space this way and the screens can be height/tilt adjusted to one's liking. The main benefit of the two screens is in application optimization where I can have tool palettes on one screen and the modeling view windows on the other. Or watch a movie on one while working or whatever on the other.

For now however considering your budget perhaps you'll be fine with the single 24". You can always get another 24" later on. :)

I'm leaning towards getting two 22" displays. My concern with getting two 24" ones (like you said, getting one now and adding another later) is that they would just be too big to have side by side. The 22" displays that Dell sells are actually 21.5" and I think two of them would fit nicely on my desk.

Which 22" displays do you have, Signal2Noise? I need to start looking at 22" displays now that I'll probably go in that direction.

And as far as my budget goes, I might be willing to buy just one 22" display now, and buy the second in a few months when I get the money..

Samsung P2250. I had started off with one, which was on sale, and at first paired it with my 24" Samsung 245BW. The bottom bezels lined up so the screens looked okay. Since I really liked the 22" I ended up getting another one when it was on sale again a few months later. I almost bought a third for Eyefinity but I could not justify the desktop realestate or the reported hit & miss performance issues. The 24" got moved over to my Mac Mini which I pretty much use for iTunes, email, and iPhone App development.

The LCD stand I got is this one which, as I said previously, makes a huge difference in terms of deskspace and adjustability.

If the 22" monitors you're looking at are 1080p models then I would go that route. If they are 1680x1050 then I would favour the 24".

Thanks for your advice, everyone!

I'm thinking about buying two Dell ST2210's.

Has anyone had any experience with them? I'm going to run to local Staples and see it in person today, but it has great reviews on the Dell website.

The U2311H was 249$ this week, it is an 23" IPS panel (1920*1080)

You might want to wait for it to go on sale. I got mine for 270 a little over a month ago.

2x 24 Samsung 2494SW
1x Dell 2311 (for display port)

I will let you know how it compares. but the ultrasharp for 250 was an amazing deal.
