There really isn't much to stay away from as they are all generally the same thing... a 7"-8" lcd with a memory card slot that displays pictures and vary from $80 to over $300

ARCHOS
i picked one of these Archos units last year after we got married for the sole purpose of not having to lug around a ton of photos, post weddding. just about everyone took digi pics and gave us cd copies (including the photographer we hired). uploaded them through my pc and voila ! right now we've prolly got over 1000 pics in there. the interface is pretty straight forward. different folders for different files, you can better organize your pic's for viewing them.
i've also got spme music, some video, good for doc's and stuff. some other options on it too. easy hook up to your tv for mass viewing, and although i haven't tried it yet, you can apparently record from your tv to this thing kinda like a vcr. mine has a 40 gb hard drive, but you can get up to 160 i believe. doesn't fit into you front pocket but it's a helluva lot smaller than a laptop (and yes there's even a kb function in there, albeit a little tedious to use). future shop for about $300.
hope this helped you, i know i spent a while looking at them online, and it wasn't until i held one in my hand and played with it did i decide on this one.
btw, overall dimensions are 3x 5 at about 3/4 inch thick.

$300 is kind of overkill IMO, for a digital picture viewer. If you need a portable movie player, most portable DVD players can be found around $100-150. Of course, HDD or memory-based players will be more expensive. Archos is a pretty good brand though if you want to go with something high end.

Picked up a 10" IQ brand, never heard of it either, seams okay she's happy @ least. No internal memory but plays sd and usb so thats all that counts as thats what she uses, 1 caveat is that videos recorded with Wave dont play any sound so I would have to convert it to play and if I am going to do that why not just burn them to a dvd and play it on our personal dvd player.
Still for 169 it's a nice solid unit IMO.
