It's funny how the Extreme processors have a lower TjMax. 85C for a QX9770.
At that temperature the eggs will get eaten up by bacteria. It is below body (78 C) temperature. It will go rancid before it gets hard!

I wouldn't let anything go over 70 degrees on full load... currently OCing my Q9450 to 2.85GHZ and my temp on Core 0 spikes at 66 degrees (the others are 2-4 degress less).

When I went to 3.0GHZ, my temps were spiking at 71degress... so I pulled back. Keep in mind though my heatsink isn't working properly, couldn't get all the stupid pushpins in on my OCZ Vendetta2

While I don't like going over 70 degrees I think that the cores spiking as high as 75 is fine. And when I say fine, I do mean probably not going to reducing the life expectancy of the processor too much

Hopefully you get rid of those push pin soon and use the Thermalright bolt-thru kit soon!

Very interesting, now that I think about it a little more.

My version of CoreTemp and OCCT are both using a TjMax of 105 degrees for my QX9650. At idle, it's claiming two of my cores are at 23 degrees. That is, my chip was apparently 82 degrees away from thermal shutdown. But since the chip real TjMax is actually 95 degrees, that means the sensor technically thinks the cores are only at 13 degrees, which is well below my ambient temps. Just goes to show how inaccurate the sensors are, the further away from TjMax you get.

Conversely, anyone with a chip with a 100 or 105 degree TjMax, double-check your temp monitoring program, because if it was assuming 95 degrees, your chip might be hotter than you think!
