another day, another 31L of LN2 burnt off and...the E8400 32M world record is mine again

i spent the day benching the HD4850s under LN2 but my E8600 wasn't playing nice so i didn't improve scores, benched at 5900MHz pretty much all day. the cards were nice benching at 1075MHz no problem, and i didn't even have temp probes on the pots. flying blind with two pots and a probe on one sure makes things interesting...plus pouring out of the dewar again. i actually broke a sweat at a couple points in the 4 hour session. the E8400 results above were done with the last couple liters of LN2.

Very nice, a new record.

31 liters, thats a lot of LN2 wouldn't like to spill that in my car moving it around.

thanks bud, the E8400 32M SPi should have been mine the whole time but someone decided they wanted it for a bit. my 32M SPi efficiency was a lot higher on the 790i but i couldn't clock past 590FSB so in the end, the RE wins out.

BTW...doing some final prep work at high FSB so i know what i can/can't do next time i have LN2. now, anyone have a 6400MHz E8600 they want to lend me for a WR

just a small update to the HD4850 CF results with the cards under LN2. they have moved on and single card GTX 280 testing has begun...

The culmination of all previous testing went down earlier this week with a 3 pot LN2 session on the HD4850s. I got my E8600 stable at 6150MHz for all benches and managed to improve a couple with some help from a pair of Tek-9 4.0 Slims on the GPUs. I did not have thermal probes on the GPU pots so it was fly-by-wire and they could have been maximized quite a bit more I believe. Either way, some CF HD4850 WRs fell and a solid chunk of HWBot points were earned from this very strong setup...cracked the top 50

i agree zlojack, thanks...that was the un-official/official goal with these cards.

I had a few liters of LN2 left so I decided to have at the E8400 again and run some PiFast and wPrime since I just figured out the secret to better times with both of them...Vista! It turned out to be quite a fruitful hour or two as I completely smashed the top HWBot E8400 PiFast time with some unruly FSB on the Rampage Extreme. This guy played with GTLs finally and it paid off in spades at the end of the session :D

well, with some help of another top clocker...AKA a slap in the face, i found out you can mount the MCW30 directly to the x48 IHS. you just need to remove the plastic spacers and angle the bolts out a slight bit...but it works and works well. as suspected in the review and demonstrated by the nylon washer trick lowering temps drastically...going direct contact lowers them a whole lot more. here is a photo of the block and the accompanying MC14s added for MOSFET cooling of the CPU and NB PWM...

the result, a NB temp that doesn't cross 35C in 23C ambients during a 32M run at 600FSB with 1.75vMCH

needless to say, this opened the door for all kinds of possibilities, including 600FSB 5:8 stable at tRD 8 (Performance Level 8). there isn't another X48 board out there that is capable of this kind of performance.

unfortunately though, this also means that the stock heat pipe assembly that was initially thought to be decent, really does hold Rampage Extreme back...when will they ever learn? heat pipe roller coasters hinder cooling...end of story.

Nice jody, PL 8 is kick ass. You should grab one of those nb pots from duniek or similar to see what you gain.

yeah, i won't order anything from over seas. just one of those things i avoid, but the only guys making NB pots seem to be in the EU
