whats the cheapst MB and cpu
I was thinking of building my Niece a comp she doesn't really play (what I like to call real ) games or anything like that the OS will most likely be Vista which can really run good on a single core but she just surfs then net watches movies a little downloading things like that so I am wondering what would you guys suggest for a cheap mother board cpu or a basic full setup
Do you plan on putting a legit operating system on it? (Of course you are!! :) ).
Do you have any old gear that will go into the build?
I tried to put a low cost system together last fall and came to the conclusion that a full low-end build with a legit OS couldn't be done for less than the low end pre-built systems from one of the big-box stores.
It pretty well comes down to the OS. I could put together better quality parts, but I always came away short by the $100 or so that a legit OS would cost me.
For a cheap system though, AMD is probably the way to go. Get a motherboard based on the 780G chipset with an X2 CPU and 2GB of DDR2-800. Should run any OS you want. The Antec NSK4480 is a great case for these kind of builds as it comes with a solid 380W PSU and is relatively cheap.
I stuck my 14 year old sister on Ubuntu, she's had no complaints with using it - I just have to set new games up etc for her, it dual boots a legit copy of XP but i see her in Ubuntu more often - she says she likes the colour better but I notice her do her homework in Openoffice a lot, which I'm sure she could use in XP if she wanted to too lol.
Guess my point is, she can handle Ubuntu for daily use no problem.
this is an easy one! Chipset AMD 780G (wich is the best integrated video chipset out there) with an AMD Athlon X2 4600+
You can build a complete computer, without display and input devices, for around 300$ with 2 gig of dual channel ddr2 Memory, 160GB 7200RPM hard drive. Wich is a verry nice setup for basic computing/internet/media center/office work/etc... even a little gaming.

This would be a pretty sweat basic setup that would run any thing you throw at it flawlessly and be upgradable for a while, since it has PCI-e a PCI-e slot available and an AM2+ socket and available memory slots for 2 more sticks.
well the CHEAPEST motherboard I can think of is the one I bought for a torrent box. Intel D201GLY2, $65 or so with price match @NCIX.com. You can find a Motherboard for less than that, but this one has an integrated CPU, Celeron 220 @ 1.2ghz. Don't let the clock speed fool you, its a Conroe-L CPU so its pretty zippy for its clock. The board only has one DIMM and one PCI slot so you don't have a lot of growth potential but just for getting a system off the ground, I don't think other than some kind of special clearance deal you will find a CPU+Board for a comparable price, unless its like a deal on a socket 754 Sempron and board.

Could be an oppurtunity to upgrade some of your own parts as well?
Have you thought about a refurbish PC from one of the online stores, they seem to be good value with full license OS with most of them and software. Of course you won't have the fun then of building it yourself but you might get a good deal.
