Nice review. A8 looks great for HTPC, or light gamers (or old game lovers).

My big wonder is why the extra "radeon cores" in the 7850k only show marginal improvements in game from the lesser CPU. TDP limit? CPU limit of feeding the GPU? Or just a plain old memory bandwidth limitation (I am leaning to this or the TDP)?

agreed, the A8 looks fantastic compared to previous gen, but the A10-7850k which I've been waiting for seems underwhelming, barely even an improvement anywhere over the 6800K. I recently started wondering when they might bring out a new A10 since I thought it would be an easy upgrade for my HTPC, but there's nothing in the 7850k that impresses me enough to spend 150-200

I realized that after. I was getting a bit confused on the backwards compatibility and the FM2/FM2+ boards.

Still haven't seen anything from ASUS or MSI on the M-itx amd boards. I hope they come out with some as I'd like to steer clear of Gigabyte for this build (though I may not have a choice in the end).

I was surprised at how limited the selection of FM2 mITX boards was when I went looking. Hell, I would have thought that m-ITX would be the biggest market share for APUs, but IIRC there were more full sized ATX boards than there were m-ITX.

edit: I also wanted to point out that the Noctua heatsink looks awfully familiar.... :) (it's not the one I put onto my zotec board.)

Generally speaking, I find the selection of AMD motherboards is pretty limited. Not sure if it's just Canada or a global issue.

This A8 chip does look pretty interesting though. If I had the need for yet another PC build, I'd surely consider it.

Memory Express has a healthy stock of FM2+ boards. Mini-itx to standard ATX.

The only way for Kaveri to be any good is with the HSA programming since it'll use both CPU and GPU for computing anything else and this is a pretty low performance CPU.... I guess I'll wait and see if they're any HSA programs made.

The review done by Anandtech paints a warmer picture as they used more recent software and they managed to overclock the 7850k to 4.6GHz. Getting an APU to play 30FPS at 1080p is nice, but I think lower resolution, like 720p, with more details would be preferred.

I think the A8 chip is a fantastic value. It is tops on my list when speccing out a build for an HTPC or user with everyday computing in mind. A10...not sure if I'd ever consider it.
