Default Asus Z87-Pro vs Maximus VI Formula

Hey guys, I'm putting together a rig for a friend and I've got everything picked out (basically same as the rig I'm putting together for myself), except for the mobo which we can't agree on.

I'm suggesting the same one I used on my new rig, Z-87 Pro, but he's leaning towards the Maximus VI Formula because of purely aesthetic reasons. I can't argue that the MVI Formula looks pretty darn cool, but I can't really say for sure that it will give him better performance.

Aside from the obvious feature differences, is there any reason for him to go for a mobo that's over $100 more expensive? He's not going to overclock by much, and basically he just cares about gaming performance...

Priorities are:
1) Longevity/reliability (don't think he'll see much difference there)
2) Performance in OC/gaming (again, with an i7-4770K, I doubt it)

Thoughts?

The Maximus might extract a bit more of an OC, but you're paying for the upgraded onboard sound, EMI shield, ROG branding and TUF armor look.

If he's got the funds available, give him what he wants.

Well he is on a bit of budget, albeit trivial since it's $2600 (omg...lol). He agrees that aside from reliability and performance, he doesn't care about the extra features, onboard sound, or number of SATA connections (he only needs four)...

I got PC360 fore Christmas my on board sound on my P8Z77-I could not drive them to my liking so I am now using a Xonar U3 USB solution to drive them. On Board was fine fore a year till I upgraded my Headphones.

What does your buddy want to do in long term with his setup. ?

He's got a dedicated soundcard that he's planning to migrate over to his new rig, so onboard won't matter to him in the slightest.

He basically will use the rig to play games (e.g. XCOM, Mass Effect, maybe BF4). It will be overclocked slightly, but he doesn't like messing with voltages so it'll be minor. He needs the mobo to last as long as the i7 4770K remains useful for games and to squeeze the best performance possible out of the cpu. I'm not sure if mobo determines that though, I guess somewhat. He's not looking to spend money just for bragging rights though.

Well I gave in and agreed to the Maximus VI Formula. Actually now that I've looked at the board it does look awesome...might change it myself...

Question: this board seems to have a great onboard audio. Is there any point for me to insert my old Asus Xonar DX PCI-e??? My speakers are Logitech Z-2300 (great sound)

Look at the Hero, looks good with the high grade components for longevity that your looking for but only $60 more than the pro I think.
