My System Specs

Default mobile cpu question/opnions

I got my hands on a Toshiba portege m400

because it's used and not exactly a most recent model, I'm planning on tearing it down to clean the dust out of the heatsink

my question is, and i'm really more or less looking for opinions...

it has a Core Duo t2400 in it, 1.83ghz, 667mhz bus

I have a Core 2 Duo t5300 (1.73, 533mhz bus) on my desk

I'm wondering if the Core 2 duo although at a lower speed, might give me better performance or not, it's hard to say.

according to this it should be, but this is only one benchmark
PassMark CPU Lookup

I'm only using 2gb of ram on the system, so it's not likely I'll be installing a 64bit OS since there's not much to gain

I already know the core 2 duo will work in the system, i've already checked that, thought i'd mention before someone else does

any thoughts?

Are you sure the BIOS will support Merom? If you're moving up to a 64 bit OS, then I would switch so you won't be limited by XP.

Tomshardware did a review of t7xxx vs t2400 and the difference is not that huge, so the difference between the t5300 and t2400 is going to be minimal. the core 2 are newer, so if I was to pick one it would be the t5300, but I really don't know if it would be worth any hassle of dealing with (I would probably just leave the t2400 in). The conclusion says they were going to test the t5xxx, but I didn't see that follow on review at a quick look.

@moocow, i already mentioned the thing will support the T5300 as this model was available with the core 2 T5XXX series cpu's later on.

I'm also running windows 7 on it now

@Bond, I did end up just leaving the t2400 in it and repasted the heatsink while i took it apart to clean the dust. I could have easily switched it, but pretty much decided there would be minimal or no gain.

I was really ticked off when i came across the single torx screw though. I hate when manufacturers do that, 30 philips screws, and 1 torx, ughr

but it's running cooler now anyway which is good.

I'm only using it to run Painter X which I got in my time working at Corel
