I'm heavily leaning towards the E8400 for my PC, it did 4.2GHz last night easily until my too slow ram caused issues. Besides that, the Q9450 has better resale, I need to start parting with some stuff.

A better mobo might help with the Q9450's OC, but if your locked in, might as well go with what clocks best.

Actually, the motherboard I have is probably my best hope for high FSB from any board. I am teetering back and forth, I just locked down a deal on a real water cooling loop so the quad is getting the nod as of right now.

Keep the E8400, that chip can do more than 4.2ghz, you just need a decent cooler and some good ram. You do have H100, and I would not recommend going watercooling beyond that, as it will be waste of money completely. That chip is E0 stepping so it doesnt run hot. At 4.2ghz with only an older Titan Fenrir I think I was below 63 degrees on LinX which is kind of like Intel Burn Test.

You can get close to 150 for that Q9450, but not more than 50-75 for the E8400, maybe 100 if you get lucky lol.

For gaming, just overclock the shit out of E8400 and wait till it dies, which would be sometime. As long as your temps are under 75 degrees at any OC, you are doing fine!

e8400 is a legend, I would stick with that one.

for gaming id go e8400 if it can do that 24/7 stable because your increasing the FSB alot unleashing a bottleneck for your video card which in gaming should help alot.

some might call foul for games like bf3 but they dont take into the consideration of fsb and raw speed differences between the 2 oc's and for all other games its going to be much smoother.

now if this was a q6600 @ 3.6-3.8 vs e8400 @ 4.0 id go Q6600 all day

Well, I do expect that Q9450 would go atleast 3.5GHz minimum. It was slapping that Corsair H100 around so I have a real loop on the way. Also, with the lower multi of the Q9450, I will be running a higher FSB as well. I'm still heavily leaning towards the Q9450, I'm hard pressed to think of anything I do with my PC that needs more than 3.5Ghz and I do like the ability to heavily multitask occasionally.

Good choice. Since its not always about profit and how much you save. The quad should be more then enough for the next few years. With today's open world RPG/Action shooters, plus multi thread software are getting better and better, a dual core is simply not enough.

Looking forward to see your overclocking results.

Small update: Got my PC finally built, CPU is running 3.4GHz and got the ram around 850MHz (4X2GB) with a 425FSB speed. Temps suck, but that is the CPU's fault. Staying 70C and under stressing. Might be some more left under the hood, gonna see if I can even possibly effectively get it cooler, but I don't think it will happen.
