My System Specs

Default CPU Advice
I'm currently running on my Core i7 920 D0 Stepping @ 3.2Ghz & Asus P6T Deluxe V2.
Should I be looking to upgrade it to 6 Core 970 or better?
or
Should I be making the switch to Sandy/Ivy Bridge?
Benefits/Drawbacks would be appreciated!

An OC'd Nehalem is still a strong processor, although Sandy/Ivy give better performance per watt.

We'll need to know what you want to do with your CPU before answering that. If your purpose is gaming,
then which games you play and what GPU you use will be important as well.

If you can get a good price on the 970 then go for it, I would. Then upgrade when Haswell, because 1155 is edging towards it's EOL.

I would say try pushing the CPU to 4Ghz and see if you're satisfied. But if you do a lot of media work an upgrade to a 970 would be a good idea.

A 4.0 GHz i7 is still a potent chip for games and most anything else. A 970 would only be worthwhile if you do encoding or run applications that can utilize the additional 4 threads.

just be warned overclocking that cpu is going to dump a lot of heat and require a good cooler.

Lots of mileage still left in that processor unless you actually need the extra cores/threads for a special purpose.
