Ivy Bridge Heat Issues for someone who may not be overclocking at all, are there any issues with heat vs sandy bridge processors? Is the heat issue only with the i7s? or is it across the entire ivy bridge line up? Rig will be used mostly for internet use, and video editing and capture. if it matters, the planned rig will be using an H80 for cooling, in a silverstone FT02 case. |
ALthough they are a warm Chip, if you are not OC'ing then the H80 will be more than sufficent. I highly doubt you will throttle the chip with heat. If you do decide to OC..well YMMV on how high you get it. I do know they are warmer than the SB's. -ST |
you could get yourself an AMD phenom and AMD graphics card. from what i read and learned is that they make excellent rendering equipment. dont know if they really run "cool n quiet". OR you could go for water cooling on the processor only....i also suggest to you, as a Comptia A+ Computer technician, to keep room temps near 75-80f. that should keep heat issues to minimum. let us know if that dosent work out for you. |

The heat issue is mainly due to the Thermal Interface Material (TIM) beneath the processors heat-spreader, as opposed to flux-less solder on previous CPU's. The heat issue is hardly a heat issue at all, especially when you are not overclocking the chip all that hard. They consume less power, and perform better than Sandy Bridge by roughly 10 %. If you decide to overclock, you will want to stay below 1.32 V |
Heat on ivy will be lower than on sandy.. When you oc the extra voltage you need is what causes it to produce more heat than sandy. There is a cross-over point at about 1.3V IIRC but you can check this up on any ivy review that did any kind of decent OC testing. |
