ARGH! 2011 or 1155?!
Ok, here's the story. I've been reading and reading to try to find out what i should go for, and I just feel dumber and dumber as I go along. So here's the question:
For a gaming computer running 3x GTX 670s in SLI, should i go for the Asus Maximus V Extreme with the i7-3770k, or should i go with the Asus Rampage IV Extreme with the i7-3820? And the reasson why, so I can start to understand this ^^
how many monitors and what resolution are you intending to play at?
What monitor setup will you be using? For the most part 1 or 2 gtx 670 will be more than enough to push great fps in all games. With that in mind I would go for 1155. If you are running extreme resolutions in a multimonitor setup, then you could justify 2011 and a 3 way sli computer. As you add more cards you get less and less benefit from the extra card. For a gaming only setup the only reason to go to 2011 is for the extra PCIE lanes and the ability to go to hex core cpus (that don't give that much of a gain).

I've gathered that the x79 chipset provides more PCIe lanes, and that GPU scaling gets worse for each card. What i have seen however, is that the 670 scales quite well.
Looking at Asus.com i see that the 1155 card provides x8/x16/x8 in 3-way SLI, and the 2011 card provides x16/x8/x16. Will this make a big difference? A HUGE one? None at all? I don't really get this part!
If its a choice between the 3770 and the 3820 the 3770 seems like an the better pick.
If it's a choice between the 3770 and the 3930 then what you are using it is a better question. Video editing is going to be much better on a 3930.
Any of these CPUs will be fine for 3x670s. I agree with Robert though.
Between the 3770 and 3820 you should choose the 3770. Performance will be similar, 3770 will draw less power, Z77 Mobos tend to be cheaper, newer, and generally have more features (thunderbolt etc.)
Your real decision should be between the 3930 and the 3770. It will depend on your intended purpose for the computer. If it is strictly for gaming, browsing, movies etc. then save some money and go 3770. All things being equal, I suspect that you'd see less than 10 fps difference between the two. If you want to do overclocking, benchmarking, video editing, major file compression and other CPU intensive things then I'd spend a few more dollars and go 3930. The 3930 is a 6 core CPU and in multithreaded applications will be much faster.
It really depends on when you plan to pull the trigger and how much you want to spend.
It's been rumoured that Intel will release Ivy Bridge based LGA2011 CPU in Q4 2012. If you plan to pull trigger closer to Q4 then you might as well wait for the new CPU to come out.
LGA1155 is 'mainstream' and LGA2011 is 'enthusiast.' What it means is: LGA1155 will almost always offer better bang for buck. LGA2011 may have same amount of features but will have better capabilities. For example, LGA2011 will have enough PCI Express channels to accommodate multiple video cards at their full capability wher as LGA1155 may have to split the channels and possibly limit the card's full potential.
I know that the 2011 offers more PCIe lanes compared to the 1155, but what i'm trying to find out here in this thread, is if it will make a big difference with PCIe 3.0 x8/x16/x8 vs PCIe 3.0 x16/x8/x16 at 5760 x 1080 res.
Some say it doesn't matter, some say it's a huge deal, and I'm just here to try to make some sense of this.
Pci-e 3.0 makes no difference either.
I'm not one for suggesting AMD for eyefinity.. but with the price drops coming and how good the 7970's are at large resolutions.. worth a look?
Though thinking back to the 690 review, there were some major problems with corssfire..
If your spending that much (or willing to) I'd go for a 3570k (if your not rendering etc, 3770k if you are) and 2 680's (or a single 690.. why not) and call it a day.
As for why.. simply the 3570k is fast enough and games don't take advantage of hyperthreadding..
and the cards.. cos the more cards you add, the less return you get... get the larger cards and cut 1 out..
You can still add a third 680 down the line if you find you need the extra kick BUT by that stage you could sell up and probably have 780 and change which may be enough on it's own to handle that res...
If you were going tri or quad 680's, I would say to go for the 2011 as then you'll be pushing the pci lanes.. your about the limit with 3 670's or 680's (not that much difference in performance till you get to high res)
