According to Asus, native x8/x8 mode is available when only PCIE_X16X/X8_1 and PCIE_X8_2B slots are in used. Any other combination of slots accesses the PLX chip.

That said, the configurations listed by Asus are different than those listed by review sites for the MVE. Asus specifies x16 or x8/x8 or x8/x16/x8 or x8/x16/x8/x8. Reviews such as VR-Zone's list the configurations as I earlier posted -- which when you look at them would make more sense, but I wonder if they were tested or if the specifications were simply copied from an earlier Asus press release.
