My System Specs

Default Question about gaming on a Server

So a buddy of mine said he is getting way better performance with his server gaming when he turns off CPU 2 in the bios.

I currently run a C32 dual 8 Core system its actually pretty damn fast gaming with only the occasional slow down or crash in Fallout haha. It plays Crysis and Battlefield amazingly well but some of the single threaded or badly coded games like DIII and Fallout see random slow downs (well fallout doesnt slow down it just locks up haha)

I wanted to know if any of the gaming server guys turn off one half to game? is that normal? or is the best performance going to be seen with all 16 cores blazing?

Thanks

AFAIK no game scales about 4 threads. That being said, windows jumps those threads around amongst your cores - so if it jumps between two CPUs that might be the cause of your slowdowns.

I'd suggest trying a processor affinity software program that forces the game(s) to stay on the first CPU and see how much a difference it makes. You can also shove ALL your other processes (from windows, background programs, etc) to the 2nd CPU while you're at it if you want.

Do you have examples of said programs??? I am perplexed haha

One way would be to open your game, minimize and then go into task manager and set the process affinity manually. Only problem is that you will have to do it each time you open the application for the first time.

but, perhaps this is of some use:

Processor Affinity - Set for Applications - Windows 7 Forums
Quote:
you can 'permanently' set a program's affinity by creating a .bat batch file in the same folder as the program, with the contents:

Code:
start /affinity 1 program_name.exe
this will force the software to use only cpu core 0. use ... /affinity 2 ... to specify cpu core 1 etc

you should then modify the program's start-menu and/or desktop shortcut to point to your newly created batchfile.

a tiny drawback is that you will see a small cmd window briefly flash on the screen before your program opens.

-------------------------------------------------------

for extra performance, you can add /high to give the application a higher cpu priority.

Code:
start /affinity 1 /high program_name.exe
