PCI-E x16 question

Hi,
this may be a newb question, but I was wondering... if the mobo says something like 3PCI-E x16 (x16/x0/x4 or x8/x8/x4), I understand that if I only use 2 lanes, the first one and the third one, they'll work at x16 and x4, but can I put a card in the second lane and the third one, and obtain (x0/x16/x4), or will I have something more like (x0/x8/x4)? It's for a graphic card and a sound card.

The graphics card should always be placed in the topmost PCI-E x16 slot. The sound card should be placed in the x4 slot (on an x1 slot if you have one) in order to ensure the board's switches don't change the layout to 8x / 8x.
