My System Specs

Default Gaming on a Server??? am I crazy??

I have a C32 Server at home. its Sexy and runs dual 4130's I called in a favor and as of Wednesday it will be running dual 4280's.

Now the question... Are these good for gaming??? I was thinking if it runs well for gaming just sell my FX8150 tower and just use the server for everything.

Here's my specs of the new tower.
KCMA-D8 mobo
2x4280's at 2.8Ghz on 16 cores Noctua 9 Coolers
16gb DDR3 1333 non ecc right now but late next week 64gb of 1333 ECC (there is 2 32gb kits sitting at work for testing)
6970 CUII GPU and 250GTS folder card
Shinobi XL Windowed case
2TB Black WD x2 not in raid just data drives and OS
2 USB 3.0 PCI-e Cards
Soundblaster XFI
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Antec Blue 750 Watt PSU

Old Gaming Rig
FX8150 4.2Ghz 8 cores under water
Crosshair V
8GB DDR3 2000
6970 CU II under water
2x120GB OCZ III SSD's in raid 0
750Watt TT PSU
Windows 7 HP 64
Thermaltake Chaser Case
Tons of watercooling gear

So whats more worth the time just keeping the gaming tower and dedicating the server to server uses in the house and folding or Sell the gamer pay down some debt and game on the big sever tower when I'm not folding???

Seeing as it is a windows box, I can't see it not handling gaming with your 6970, P.S.> jealous
P.P.S. hahaha that 6970 would make a good candidate for the bracket I bought for the closed loop cooler on your core(have a spare bracket LMK if you want it i'll mail it to you)

Obviously the cheaper option is to game on the server and sell the gamer, but it really all depends if you want to be folding 24/7 or not.

You're not going to get much of a performance difference between them. Slightly reduced performance on anything CPU bound, since I highly doubt you'll find a game that scales past 4 cores, let alone up to 16.

I have a very green wife, she says if we are not gaming the computers are off and she lets me fold for a total of 8 hours a week so basically one night a week haha. I will fold rarely with the tower now that my accounts are in the red so if it will work to game it will be my gamer :)

Good bye FX system you did me well for 6 months

Honestly, i'd take some of the games you play, slap them on the server board system & do like fraps runs & compare preformance between the 2.

I could see 1 big advantage in multi core based games that take advantage of the core's. Also depending on clock speeds... oc'in the chips would also work as well.

Definately let me know how it goes, always was curious how gaming would be on a multi chip server board vs single socket solutions in general !! :)

Gaming on a server? I'd say you can try, but don't expect much.

Why? for one, thread jumping. Windows jumps threads around from core to core to load balance servers, which is fine when you're jumping around the cores of one CPU, but when you start jumping around on a 2cpu system its not as smooth if you ask me.

Also, games are still more clockspeed dependant than you might think. Lower-clocked cores will for sure bottleneck a 6970, it'll be starved. Simple way to check this: just run a game on the gamer and check the gpu load, then compare with the same game on the server with the same gpu -> if its lower you should consider backing off on the eye candy.

However, DONT drop your resolution too low, or else you'll be CPU-bound all over again since lower res is much easier on a GPU. I'd say in the games you mentioned you could probably get smooth framerates around 1440x900 or so, with medium details but YMMV.

good to know Quadfather.. I will be testing this all tonight, the 8 cores I have are clocked at 2.7GHZ where the quads are at 2.6Ghz, I will be testing multiple different setups with this rig but I would think at 2.6/2.7 on 8 / 16 cores I should have enough power for games like DIII/SWTOR/World of Tanks, if I need more power for a FPS I am still a Xbox360 guy on that side as there is something about the 50" screen on FPS's that I am drawn to.
