Default AMD Phenom II X4 965BE + Asus M597A Combo

I just wanted to ask if this before I go pull the trigger. Will this be a decent budget combo for some gaming? It would be used for all the Blizzard games and SW:TOR, along with some F2P games like Mechwarrior: Online and World of Tanks.

It will have 8GB of DDR3-1600 ram (not sure of brand yet) and a MSI GTX460HAWK GPU. I might OC since I have a CM 212 Evo HSF.
I h ave looked at the i3-2120 and a motherboard but I have read that hyperthreading "can" cause problems in gaming sometimes plus the motherboards are roughly $20-$30 more for a decent mobo of the same quality of the M597A. I like the new BIOS they have.

I forgot to mention if I would notice much a difference if I went with a X4 945 and save $20 and it be a 95w instead of a 125w cpu.

You'll have absolutely zero problems playing any games currently on the market. You can easily overclock the Phenom 965 to 3.8 or higher if you have adequate cooling.

It's a great bang for the buck combo (I have the exact same mobo/cpu)

Good to hear from people with the same combo! I have a CM Hyper 212+ Evo HSF and I really like it. I got it for $25 and it has such a better cooling potential in that stock intel push pin crap.
Think it would be possible to push it to 3.8ghz on that HSF?

My next question I guess is if it is worth to save $20 and get the 945 and put it towards something else or just save it.

I got it up to 3.7 on a slightly smaller cooler than yours, so 3.8 shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for you.
See this thread for more overclocking information r.e. the 965

I'm currently running FSB of 200.68 and multiplier of 18.5, with a Vcore of 1.5, and it's 24/7 stable @ 58/59C.

Another member posted that AMD CPUs like to be OC'd with a higher FSB and lower multiplier, so I want to find time later this week to play around and see if I can get a better OC.

As to your second question, the 945 doesn't have an unlocked multiplier, so overclocking it is a little more involved. Also, since it has a lower TDP, I'm not sure how high you could realistically take it.

Thanks for that link, I am reading it now. I also think ill drop the 945 out since ive quickly went over some reviews and for an extra $20 I think its worth it. I would most likely just blow that $20 on a pizza or something, hah.
If you don't mind, I had another question about the ram speed. I will most likely get the Corsair Vengeance 8GB kit DDR3-1600. Now reading the cpu and from reviews they ever only mentioned running ram at 1333. The Asus board says it can do 1600 but I haven't found anything yet to confirm it. So I am hoping I can just drop that ram in and it run at 1600 without changing anything.
Because im not a big tech with this stuff OCing and changing things kinda scare me, I usually just leave it everything on AUTO unless it is super simple change picking from a list of options, heh.

I'm running Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz Ram. I simply dropped it in, left all the settings at Auto, and forgot about it. I haven't had a RAM related issue yet. You'll be fine.

All of the reviews would have been from 2009 and maybe 2010, back when 1600 Ram wasn't really considered mainstream. 1333 would have been the enthusiast grade ram back then, which I suppose is why it was included on most of the reviews. Don't forget, the 965 is almost a three year old processor.

Well I don't really care if it doesnt run at its set speed of 1600 and just runs 1333. Im sure its not a difference ill notice. I just want to drop it in and work like you mentioned. Well I am excited then to get these in my hands and see how they work.

I am replacing a Intel E8400 b/c the motherboard died and I parted out the cpu, ram and sold it on this forum (thank you HWC!). They sat on craigslist any only got dirty low ball offers for it on that crappy place.
Im not expecting a huge jump from what I had but it will be nice to have a quad core @ 3.6 and if im lucky ill read a overclocking tutorial for this cpu and see if I can get it to 4.0

I got setup with a good deal from Soullessone21 for a Asus M599X & Corsair 8GB PC-1866. If it doesn't sell I might be interested in the CPU. Good luck on though on the sale! Once I get enough credit to post in the buy/sell I myself will have a Antec 1200 and HCP-850 that I want to part with.
