Intel Xeon E3 vs E5
I was going to make a single cpu server/workstation build and was wondering which cpu to go with and if there is a big difference in performance. The quad core Xeon E3 1275 (socket 1155) or the six core Xeon E5 2620 (socket 2011). Normally it would seem obvious that the six core would be much faster, but the low clock speeds (2ghz) concerns me compared to the 3.4 ghz E3. I will be using the build to run a program called Gaussian on Linux, which is highly threaded and can utilizes lots of memory, but also likes high clock speeds. We currently have 8 year old and aging dual socket dual core xeons which run at 2ghz and, need to be replaced. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice on the matter. :)

Well the E5 will probably run quite a bit cooler and the extra cache is always welcome. With your usage and such a low price difference I would get the E5.
Are you using ECC ram or are you actually using features that a Xeon gives you over the mainstream processors?
Yes, I am planning to use 16gb of unregistered ecc memory, which is the only reason I am going with the Xeon series.
