My System Specs

Default 2011 pci e 40 lanes

Hello

So to get 40 lanes, 4 cards are needed? 16x8x8x8 or is it 16x16x8 (LGA 2011)?

MB specs on the x79 show 16x8x8 for 32 lanes as old LGA1366.

if I'm not mistaken some lanes are taken up by additional chips on the motherboard such as additional lan, sound, USB controllers, sata controllers. Which may be why you get 16x8x8

It also depends on the motherboard you have, for example I believe the ASUS IV Rampage X79 will do 16x 8x 16x in a 3 way config or 16x 8x 8x 8x in a 4 way config.

there is no difference between 16x, 8x the cards run only as fast as the slowest lane so if you are tri sli at 16x, 16x, 4x it is the same as 4x, 4x, 4x. You don't need to fill the lanes and it depends on the mother board what the lane distribution is.
