Default What to do?

Hey guys,

I need some upgrade advice here... I just picked up an evga GTX 580 SC, so I'm good on the GPU front.

My system is as follows:
  • Intel Q6600 G0 stepping (want to upgrade)
  • Gigabyte EP45-UD3P (want to upgrade)
  • 4GB OCZ Reapers 1150MHz (want to upgrade)
  • Silverstone OP-750
  • Evga GTX 580 SC (upgraded from a GTX 470)
  • TRUE 120
  • 2x 640GB WD Caviar Blacks in RAID0
  • 1TB WD Caviar Black storage drive
  • 500GB Seagate storage drive
  • Auzentech Prelude
I game. Mainly games like BF:BC2, COD, other FPS shooters, some Source games. I also do a fair bit of video encoding using TMPGEnc, mainly converting .MKVs to .WMVHD files.

So what's the best for my situation? Wait till SB mobos come in? Wait for IB? Buy used 1156 or 1366 setups?

I would like to upgrade the components that are bolded & italicized. I would like to keep my PSU if posible. I have no issues buying used. I also do not have a desperate need to upgrade, but the main components of my PC are approaching 4 years now, I think it's time for a change...

go cheap on an i3 perhaps?
cpu and mobo and ram for around 250 maybe, maybe less depending on what you need.
you can sell your mobo cpu ram for around 150 or better maybe

or maybe wait till bulldozer but that could take another little while? if sb i3 unlocked were to come soon i may go for that

problem is though youd need a stronger cpu to drive that 580...hmm.....you know what? go for a 2500k build. b3 stepping mobos
are out it seems

Personally, your system is fast enough that I'd wait to see what Intel LGA 2011 and AMD Bulldozer platforms offer. In the short term, perhaps consider upgrading to an ssd and increasing ram.

Ok, so buying 1156 or 1366 at this point is a waste then?

I'll be keeping an eye on SB and IB to decide then I guess. Thanks for the advice.

Agree with above comments. Given your current setup I would bypass current AMD and also 1156/1366. Either go 2500k when SB is sorted out, see what BD brings or IB when that comes around (all depends how long you want to wait).

I would also wait and just get SB, for the money/performance you really can't beat it and well the only other option is to wait for Bulldozer and see what its capable of!

Looks like a solid choice of components. If you have the cash, I say go for it! It'll last you for a few years if you decide to overclock.

You might need some sort of mounting kit/adapter to use your TRUE on 1155.
