i7 950 vs. i5 2500k (same price)

Hello, tomorrow I'll be going to the closest Micro Center (long drive) and they have the i7 950 and i5 2500k both for $199. Also is the x6 1090t in the same league? It's also $199. I know the SB generally scores better in tests, but is it worth the wait? I'm interested in gaming FPS type games like Crysis as well as MMORPG's like WoW. BTW I've heard the i7 has triple channel memory, but does this mean I can't do 2x2gb and I'll have to use 3x2gb?

no i dont think you can run dual ram on i7... only dual ram on i5/7 sb or older...

you should see better preformance in i7 sb but i prefer to use my i7 system because its not high class as i7 with triple ram and there is some sata issues (fixed but nah)... or you can wait for better i7 at this year... fall or eariler... or even wait for amd bulldozer...


btw what is your currently computer rig?

you can run single/dual/triple channel on the x58 mobo, just like any other platform.


you won't see much difference in games with either CPU, GPU will be a mush bigger factor.

well... i remember someone that why i want to buy dual ram on my x58... so i fixed my list to use triple ram...

i assume triple ram is the best result than dual ram...

ram speed between dual VS triple channel is hardly noticiable fronm the seat of you you pants, in benchmark performance will drop for sure.

triple channel only would be a real PITA to troubleshoot ram problem

now that the memory is sorted out... i7 950 vs i5 2500k vs x6 1090t
all the same price, but SB will require months to wait. I have no real reason to be in a hurry although waiting till April will be very boring

IF you dont need the extra threads. what are you going to do with it, break it down in percentages plz :)

rumours says retailers are supposed to have some fixed SB boards in march, but i guess you'll have to be very quick to order since they'll be going fast IF they do show up.

if you're main task is gaming, either of those will do the job just fine. it's not like you'll see a big change in FPS between any of those CPU.

in terms of performance i'd rank them 2500k>950>1090t
in terms of bang for buck i'd rank them 2500k>1090t>950(1366 platform is more expensive overall)
