Default New Budget Computer - Please Advise

Hello,

I'm building a budget computer for a friend with a budget of around $400. I haven't dealt with anything in that range so I'm not even sure if I can build a whole computer so any help on good parts would be appreciated. I already have a case for it so I just need the usual parts. If there is a video card that can be bought for a decent price that might play some older games like Warcraft 3 that would be great as well. I'm hoping to have one of the newer generation chips as well, maybe Duo Core but not Core 2 Duo or AM2 unless there's something in the cheap range for those.

Let me know if this can be done. Thanks for your time all.

I guess the main factor will be if you're overclocking or not ...

Overclocking - Intel Pentium Dual Core
Not Overclocking - AMD Athlon64 X2

I would say grab the AMD64 5000 Black as it's on sale for 130 right now. Pretty damn good chip if you ask me, you easily see that thing OC'd to 3ghz with a little bit of work.
And considering you don't need much for a GPU considering Warcraft 3 is how old now? Geforce 7300GT after MIR is on for 50. Not to shabby for the price if I do say so myself.

Here's my suggestion. But double chack that the Ram I picked actually works on that board as i have no idea. I just picked the first & cheapest "decent" ram I saw.

ASRock ALIVENF6G-VSTA mATX AM2 - $61
NCIX FORUMS - Overclocking? - ASRock ALIVENF6G-VSTA mATX AM2 NF6150-43...

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1GHz - $83
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...anufacture=AMD

Sparkle Power SPI ATX-400PN 400W - $41
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...20Power%20Intl.

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB - $69
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...l&promoid=1019

Samsung SH-S202J DVD - $29
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...g&promoid=1019

HIS Radeon HD 3850 256MB - $181
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...S&promoid=1019

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB 2X1GB - $25
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...1&promoid=1019

Total = $489. To bring it down to closer to the $400 mark you'll probably want to drop the gfx card to something cheaper like an 8600GT for $99. (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...X&promoid=1019) but the 3850 will blow its pants off and you'll get a lot more than Warcraft 3 on this baby

That is a nice build, but oh do I hate MIR! Most of the time a month or 2 goes by, I forget about it, then i get a surprise in the mail!

Ya thos MIR can suck if you don't have the cash up front, that's the only downside :(. But I do like surprises :)

I wouldn't get a motherboard with onboard graphics if your not going to use it. Otherwise it seems like a good list Thund3rball.
