AMD Phenom II X4 840 & X4 975 Black Edition Review Comment Thread

There is no denying the fact that AMD has been hell-bent on providing the CPU market with some much-needed value options as of late. While this approach hasn't led to any direct competitors against Intel's high-end products, there are several Phenom and Athlon processors that feature an excellent price / performance ratio. Today, AMD is releasing two more quad core Phenom II CPUs: the enthusiast-friendly X4 975 BE and the sub-$120 X4 840.

Good price I guess, still pretty hard to get one of these considering the abysmal difference in performance compared to SB now for $100 more

Found a mistake. The link in the conclusion section is broken and does not lead to this forum page.

Nice review, although it's a shame that the 975 is just coming out now with Sandy Bridge here. Although if the price gets cut enough it might be a budget contender.

Link still has issues too, it has an extra http and it's the 1100T thread link.

Cheers.

I'm surprised the 840 did so well against the 945. they have the same clocks. yet I thought the L3 cache would have given the 945 a more noticeable lead. I just got a amd 945 95w(sucky MB) chip for 100$ but now I feel like I pretty much paid what it was worth instead of getting a deal :(

^^I would say that's still a good deal. enjoy.

Nice review. AMD can still (through price structure) compete in low to mid processors, but the desperately need bulldozer.

I wonder why they didn't call it athlon II x4 650?...would seem like the logical name to me if it has no L3

freeloader1969 January 4, 2011 07:40 AM

Off topic...

Let us all hope that AMD has something good with Bulldozer and it's lesser siblings. With the release of I3-2100 and 2120, Intel will eat into AMD's low end. Better to have two healthy CPU producers than one.

On topic...

Like the reviewer said, these chips will make great drop in replacements for anyone running a dual core AM3 system who needs some more speed. Not too useful to anyone else though.

Nice review,
It's just sad that AMD has nothing else to propose, now that SB is out.

AMD CPUs are a hard sell...they really have to wake up...
