Default New Gaming Rig

Hey guys, haven't been around for awhile, Site looks great. Anyways, I want some help with a new gaming rig. I have no preference between AMD or Intel anymore, I've been out of the loop for awhile so I don't know how they compare, so please enlighten me. AM2 or C2D, no quad yet.

Sli is an option, not a must
HDD, 250-320gig,
suggest me a motherboard ( ive been looking at gigabyte, and evga for intel, not sure for AMD)
suggest me a CPU
DVD RW
Vid Card, I am thinking the 8800 GT, not sure which company yet

Budget, Less than $1000, I have to factor in a case as well, monitor, kb+m covered

Thanks

I didn't bother with SLI cause if you are not going to do it right away then don't bother IMHO. It's added cost and you are trying to stick to a budget and get best bang for buck... right?

With the priciest parts I chose it's $1063 before tax. You can swap the MB and/or CPU (I gave you two options on each) to get under $1000. These are according to deals on right now and some are MIR which will require more cash upfront but you can get it back later. Have fun! :)

P35-DS3R - $133

CPU: E4600 - $165.59
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L - $101.96
RAM: Mushkin HP2-6400 2x1GB - $65.71 (Before rebate)
HDD: WD SE16 320 GB - $125.25
GPU: Gigabyte 8800GT - $279.99
CPU Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 - $25.63
GPU Cooling: Thermalright HR-03 GT - $54.99
DVD Writer: Pioneer DVR-212D - $35.75
Case/PSU: Antec Sonata III - $124.80

Total: $979.67

This is just an example, but it hits all the important areas. This particular setup doesn't allow for RAID, nor does it allow SLI in the future (XFire would be an option, though). You won't see any extreme overclocks from the CPU/heatsink combination, but 3 GHz should be attainable.

Default how does this look

how does this look

MB - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L - 89.11
CPU - C2D e4600 - 149.55
Ram - 2G Corsair XMS2 5400c (already have)
GPU - XFX GeForce 8800GT XT 512MB 640MHZ 1.9GHZ - 264.16
HDD - Seagate Baracuda 7200.10 320gb - 91.80
DVD - LG GSA-H55N - 28.33
Case - Gigabyte Isolo - 94.36
PSU - OCZ Gamextream 700watt - 117.95

Total - 898.66 Shipped

Should I be able to rock games like COD 4 with med-high settings with good frame rates?

Suggest any changes you might have. This is all from DirectCanada. Are they as reliable as NCIX? Thanks.

You're welcome. Here's my thoughts:
  • Get the 8800 GTS I picked as it is a better card for the same price. It has better cooler and slightly better performance. It doesn't have lifetime warranty (I think) but when was the last time you needed a video card for life? I own the GT it's great to but best bang for buck is the GTS there.
  • If you are not going water that TT Soprano case is a hell of a deal compared to the Gigabyte you picked which is really setup for water.
  • For $25 more dollars you can get the E6750 which will rock on the E4600.
  • The Corsair PSU I picked is cheaper, more powerful and every bit as clean, quiet & reliable as a PSU needs to be. The OCZ is good to but why pay more when you don't need to?
  • The Seagate drive is great w/ 5 year warranty. I was just going for maximum storage/price so your choice is fine.
