Default Looking to move to i7

So, im looking to upgrade my e8400 to an i7.

saw this on sale at ncix

NCIX.com - Buy NCIX Silent Bundle Deal Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core CPU & Noctua NH-U12P 120MM Heatpipe Cooler - 930 & NH-U12P SE2 In Canada.

i hear that the i7 930 can overclock to near 4.2, more commonly 4 or so?

Im going to buy this card, and im looking at NCIX.com - Buy ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA1366 DDR3 CrossFireX SLI 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 PCI USB 3.0 Motherboard - SABERTOOTH X58 In Canada.

to go with it.

What ram would be advised to go with this setup for overclocking?

look at this one from newegg, it's the i7 950 for a dollar less
it's faster and cheaper. Can't better then that

This is the Canada website.
Newegg.ca - Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950

same motherboard, put cheaper again.
Newegg.ca - ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

it's sold out right now but if your willing to wait this ram is amazing
Newegg.ca - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1600C8D

I have a couple of Asus i7 boards (actually, both P6Ts, vanilla version) and my Mushkin ram and Corsair modules worked perfect with them right out of the box.

Both my boards are doing 4.0GHZ, and only one had any issue at all with it (but I blame it on my cpu).

I bought 1600mhz ram for both rigs, and the highest clock I have on them for 4.0GHZ was just over 1500mhz, so I would go with quality, typically-priced 1600mhz ram.

Otherwise, you can always check out the qualified vendor list to find some affordable 1600 ram on the list.

fair enough for the 950, but it doesnt come with a fan, so that would be another 100 more.

While i don't want to skimp out, i would much prefer to spend 100 less.

As for the motherboard, could def price match it..

i was thinking of going with

NCIX.com - Buy G.SKILL F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Triple Channel Memory Kit - F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ In Canada.

for ram.

But im just buying the CPU and cooler for now, going to wait till next sale to see if something comes up in the motherboard and ram department.

The upgrade isn't terribly vital right now, so i can wait for prices to drop in some areas.

or http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=34719&vpn=F3%2D12800CL9T%2D6GBNQ&man ufacture=G%2ESkill&promoid=1260 if your on a tight budget.

For the price, I'd stick with the 930 deal, either way the 930 and 950 should still hit 4.0 so for the same price you get a quality heatsink as well.

you sure you dont want to go the 1156 route? sure you dont get full 16x, but it wont make much of a dent, except in your pocket :)

clocking a hyperthreaded 530 stock to or past 4 gigs on decent air is very very fun

Yes, the 930 is a good deal, but the heatsink that it comes with is 79.99, you can stick with the stock one for a while then upgrade the heatsink in the future. yeah they'll hit 4.0 ghz, but the 950 will score higher in vantage. But if you end up getting the 930 you won't be disappointed. I have one and I love it scored 65k in vantage with a 4.0ghz overclock, but they didn't have the deal going on with the 950 when I bought my 930, otherwise I would of got that.
