My System Specs

Default Phenom X4 9950 -> Phenom II X6 1055T?

Hi all,

Would upgrading my main desktop (see "My System Specs") from a Phenom X4 9950 to a Phenom 1055T give me a noticeable boost for CPU-related tasks?

I'm mainly into gaming (I have the strange urge to get games with the intent of bringing down my rig e.g. Supreme Commander, Crysis, will get Crysis 2 if it doesn't have a stupid DRM scheme), programming and virtual machines. The programs I use right now are generally optimized for less than 3 threads (hopefully that will change), so I want better single-threaded performance as well as multi thread. Will the 1055T deliver in that respect as well? (any "unused" cores will be used for Folding / Rosetta)

I'm running a DDR2-800 RAM but I hear that doesn't make much of a difference. If I upgrade to Phenom II, I also intend to OC *almost* to the point of killing my motherboard's 4+1 VRM.

If anyone has made an upgrade from an older quad to this CPU or similar, let me know if it's been a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks

your boards not that bad. lookie lookie.

You will see a difference in CPU related tasks, but I don't think it will make much of a change in games.

there will be a massive difference in gaming. When i upgraded from a 9550 to a Phenom II 940 the difference was night and day. I don't know how good the 6 core gen of Phenom's are... but you have no-where to go but up from that 9xxx series phenom =P... and i mean WAY up!

I stand corrected. I knew the original Phenoms were underwhelming in performance, but I figured they would have been fine for gaming. Learned something new today.

Thanks for the replies. I've hated my decision to get the Phenom 9950 three weeks before the Phenom II 940 was released, so hopefully I won't be CPU-bound on everything with the upgrade :)

well, if youve waited this long, maybe wait for the 95 watter versions? cooler running, less power hungry, perhaps better clockers due to better thermals? :)

well the phenom II catched up to core2duo/quad so the difference is not earth shattering but 20 percent or so is good to have.
