My System Specs

Default AMD Opty 180

I've read a lot about this processor, however I know little who actually use it. I just want to hear the opinion of actual users of the opty 180.

My System Specs

Default Hi Chibi

I have an Opteron 165, asus8n32-SLI deluxe, and 2gb corsair PT4000 Id be willing to part with for $200 if your interested. The opteron is a LCBE9E 07 steppng and ocs (1.275 volts) stable to 2.8 without any effort at all on this board. It will go to 2.95 if you want to push it all on the stock cooler. With an 8800GTX it will run crysis on high at a minimum of 28fps. If your interested ill let you know. I can post pics up in the next few weeks depending on when the new board arrives and if it works.

Default thats ok

From what ive seen though theres little or no difference between the 165 or 185 in terms of overclocking on a good board.

If you just want to run stock on a lesser board though the 180 is better of course. If your buying new though it really is worth going for a cheap core2 upgrade.

Ill be putting the MB ($80), 165 ($50), PT4000($60) up for sale later...dont mind parting out.

I am just looking at the stock setup.. the 165 is 1.8ghz, 170 is 2.0ghz, 175 is 2.2ghz, 180 is 2.4ghz, and 185 is 2.6ghz... So from what I have read theres not a lot separating them other then there stock speeds. so my look on this right now is what would make a better OC and be the most stable. I want to have a stable system running at 3ghz. 2.6ghz over clocked to 3ghz is a 15% overclock. the 165 at 1.8ghz would be about a 66% overclock. I could go to the 175 and have a 36% overclock which is fairly stable.

You see what I am getting at.

Unless you know someone who has one.. you're likely gonna have to pay an arm & a leg from a retailer that priced it too high for anyone to want to buy.... or hit eBay(risky). The higher-end(175+ won't really be worth the money... i wouldn't go higher than a 170).

Default see what you mean

Although I've never seen any Opteron 165-185 go much above 3.0ghz.

That seems to be the ceiling. You willl often find that the max stable OC of the 165-180's are identical on the same stepping, as are their temps.

You just have to push the oc on the cheaper 165 a bit more to reach the max stable oc. Thats why the good stepping 165's were by the far the most popular of the opterons.

If you want to OC you should be more worried about STEPPINGS than whether its a 165-185. LCB9E-07 and CCBBE. See link below for examples although its old so they dont have the LBCB there.

GameSpot: The Dual Core Opteron Steppings of Choice - Hit 3ghz!

My LCB9E 165 hits 2.8-2.9@1.275v, full load 42-44oc stock cooler with no effort. There are lesser stepping 180's that cant break 2.6ghz stable!!

You must be kidding... Opterons have gone WAY above 3ghz.
Record high for 185ghz is 3807.86ghz. check it out.

the 185 is available at newegg.com for $229. Here

you can find the other high scores on all the opterons here.

Default mmm

Couple of points.

The vcores used there are just crazy+they are watercooled. That looks more like a suicide run @3.8.

The other 185s were topping out around 3.2.

Stepping is more important.

Theres quite a few 165s in the 3+ territory with watercooling+higher volts.THE OVERCLOCKING WORLD RECORD DATABASE

See also previous link Honorable Mention:Higher models (175, 180, 185) are a waste of money and wont fetch any higher clocks. Youd be raving mad to spend $200+ on a 185 at the moment.

That's great if you have a way of getting it here. The Egg doesn't ship to Canada.
