My System Specs

Default i5 660 vs 661

What are the differences between the 660 and 661 ?

They've both got the same 3.33 GHz clock speed and 4 MB L3 cache, so what warrants the $30 price increase for the 661 ? Also, does anyone know the overclocking headroom of these chips on high end air cooling? Would 5 GHz be doable with my Corsair H50?

Its the IGP.

The 660 IGP clocked at 733mhz and the 661 IGP is clocked at 900MHZ.

Mac had a great review here at HWC.

Agreed. There are no other differences.

I see, so useless then for anyone who uses a dedicated GPU.

And it makes them great power saver for normal e-mail/htpc machine.

Make sure you read up on power usage of an 5-6ghz clarkdale dual core. Its not worth it , but that is just me.

As per my knowledge the Core i5 600 series processors are targeted at the upper segment of the mainstream market priced at 176 to 284 USD and for dual-core processor (Core i5 661) that will cost you nearly 200 USD. overall the Core i5 660/661 is a very good product with a lot of tweakability and potential.

I believe the 660 has VT (hardware virtualization) but the 661 doesn't, but that's a moot point now.

All i-series CPUs have VT-x (hardware virtualization). The 660 has VT-d (directed I/O virtualization) but the 661 does not.

Potential or not, a dual core is a dual. Its ancient.
