MSI K9A2 Platinum compatible CPUs?

Hey there!

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, and I am not sure what will fit into my motherboard. The motherboard I have is this: Newegg.ca - MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard . I am looking to upgrade the CPU to a 3.0 gHz quad core, but when I was looking at some of them, most of them needed a AM3 socket, while mine is only AM2 and AM2+.

I found this CPU, which looks like it will fit, but I would like clarification before I order it :p Newegg.ca - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops . The socket types match, but the only thing that concerns me is the lack of a cooling unit under specifications. Can anyone recommend one that would fit with my mobo?

Thanks,
a helpless noob

Any AM3 up to (but not including) the new hexa-core chips will run fine on it. just make sure to update the bios first. I'm currently running a 955be on mine with no problems.

All Phenom II X6 CPUs are now supported by the K9A2 Platinum via BIOS Update from MSI. (Worked fine on mine) :bananafunky:
