Default the best cpu...

The best cpu on the market. This word may differ from person to person, I am not looking for the strongest one. I am looking for the one that is the best in: price, quality, overclocking possibility and temperature..
It has crossed my mind to switch sides, my X2 just doesn't satisfy my needs anymore..
I don't play so much games but when I do I want to be playable.
I am currently reading lots of reviews but I need your help to decide...
It crossed my mind to stay with X2 and buy the 5000+ black box edition. I heard that it can be oc'ed to 3.0 easily. Is that going to make a big difference?..I mean, i have 4600 :/
How is E6750 against 5000+ or 6400 (black edition)...

My System Specs

Default wait about 8 weeks

I'm in the same boat as the opteron@2.85 bottlenecks my 8800GTX and Id like to OC the GPU a bit more...currently there is no point.

The best CPU will be here shortly (8weeks!)..the new 45nm Intel lineup is in the rumor section.

The 2.66ghz quad (45nm) with 12mb cache for $316 looks like the real winner.
The E8400 for $180 also looks like a GREAT value dualcore with 6mb cache + it wont draw as much power.

Difficult to decide what to get. I'm just not sure quadcores will be fully utlized in games for a bit and the E8400 will run cool and OC very very well.

Depends if you need more than two cores for work perhaps. Of course you will need a nice board to work these beauties.

The E8400? ....
Well this Xmas i'm going to purchase 1tb hdd, I'll see after a couple of weeks what cpu to get but the thing is that I don't really now if I need a quad...
What's the difference between E6600 and the 6750 ?..other than the price (E6750 is cheaper..)
Ugh, i don't really want to change the mobo :/

If you don't need a Quad Core, then wait and till January and get an Core 2 Duo E8400

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Specs
  • 3.0Ghz Core Speed
  • 1333 FSB
  • 6MB L2 Cache
  • 45nm Core
  • around $183.00 USD
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Specs
  • 2.66GHz Core Speed
  • 1333 FSB
  • 4MB L2 Cache
  • 65nm Core
  • $227.36 @ NCIX
IMHO I'd wait till Jan and get an E8400

This is the board that I have and it will support the new 45nm CPU with a BIOS update. It's a damn good board for OC and stability.

NCIX.com - Buy Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L ATX LGA775 P35 1333FSB 1PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN Motherboard - GA-P35-DS3L In Canada. - $104.34

Gonna buy that for sure...I guess that good things require sacrifices, and If I'll sell the am2 mobo and the cpu I'll complete the gap of money..after all they are only 6 months old..
Can't wait for the 8400 :D

well this is a chart of current prices and possible upcoming prices I was told from a different site that in January the Q9450 is coming out and it is supposed to be very good for overclocking thats why I am holding off on the Q6600 I was planing on buying.

Processor Pricing
We also have Intel's pricing for their current 65nm processors as well as the upcoming 45nm processors, up till January 2008. The 45 nm Yorkfield and Wolfdale processors are in bold for easier reference. Do note that these are prices for quantities of 1000 and subject to change.

What's the diff between the E8200 and 8400 ?..if it's only the frequency ..20 bucks for 0.34ghz Well well, the prices look very tempting, I hope Amd has something up their sleeve or else it's not going to be any competition...

My System Specs

Default apart from frequency

As far as I know every time you move from say a 8400-8200 the "locked" multiplier is reduced.

You will then need a higher FSB to get your target OC. This will cause more issues when running RAM 1:1.

The chip itself is likely better binned running at the same temperature as the lower model.

Otherwise it does seem silly paying such a premium for a few dozen mhz if none of the above change as well.
