My System Specs

Default Whats a better deal... Athlon vs. Opty

Been in huge debate over what processor to get. For the longest time it's been opty ALL THE WAY... however, A buddy of mine found this and it's now making me think again.
NOTE* S939

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Processor - 2.20GHz, 2MB Cache, 1000MHz (2000 MTs) FSB, Toledo, Dual-Core, Retail, Socket 939, ADV4400CDBOX, Processor in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

From what I know.. thats a $350 to $400 processor 2 or so years ago.

Now if I were to buy an opty 165
Premier Computer Canada

Or even one higher then that. Whats the better deal in performance and reliability perspective. Price is undeniable, It's a killer deal.

So is opty worth the extra cash?

In this case, it would just be better to use the Athlon X2. Opterons are usually only a consideration when they are at parity with the Athlon sibling.

The opty 165 oc's well....2.6- 2.8 np usually. But I don't know how well the x2s compare. I would pick the opty over the 4400x2 just my 2 cents.

for $100 I can get a really nice processor with stock 2.2.. or spend $180 and get the opty 175 at 2.2...

like GAH... from what I can tell.. there isn't much difference other then the price. This is a tougher decision then it looks.

Just get the cheaper one, buy yourself some beers and a better heatsink, and you're good to go!

The 165 seemed to be the way to go when I was looking at them. IIRC, everthing after that was hitting pretty well the same OC wall no matter where stock speeds started at.

It's been a while though so my memory might not be as good as it should be.

I've got a Opteron 170 which runs happily at 2.95GHZ, which is great, but considering you are keeping an old system alive, may as well go for the best cheapest option until your next purchase, which should be soon, if you plan on being able to play some new titles, Crysis rings a bell, that will need more than a lowly sub 3.0GHZ dual core can offer.

Get the 4400+. It'll overclock just as well, and you'll like the possibilities from the higher multiplier.
