Definitely not impressed with this... for the same price, you could have 3 930s, 12 cores and 24 threads and overclock the same. Thoroughly underwhelming, just another excuse for Intel to charge a grand. Glad I bought my 920 when it was released, even with a C0 I get over 4 GHZ and performance that's very close to this processor in the real world. And I've had it for a year and a half. And it cost 1/3 of what this does.

Is there anyword when 32nm quads will be coming. I'd love a hexacore but I shudder at that price.

Yep, but that's the market they're going for. The extreme procs have never been for us normal folks who need to pay attention to bang-for-buck.

In many cases it's not the true enthusiasts who'll pick them up, rather it's the folks who'll never overclock the chip, yet want the fastest possible proc. In this case though, it'll probably be an enthusiast chip as there is currently no lower priced equiv.

Interesting. Excellent review as always.

Can vmware 3.0 (not the latest version which is restricted to 4 threads) take advantage of twelve threads? Is -smp 12 possible?

And you'll have to buy three motherboards, three sets of RAM, three cases, three PSUs, three video cards, and you'll be consuming at least three times as much power. Also, this is an Extreme Edition CPU, which means it does not fall into standard pricing models. Once Intel releases the mainstream version, it will be priced in line with their normal lineup.

Rumour is that there will be a handful of quad-core Xeon versions, but no consumer-branded 32nm quads.

I don't think you're one to complain about someone else's grammar.

VMWare Player 3.0 is limited to 8 threads.
