My System Specs

Default AMD or Intel... 400$ CPU/Mobo/ram combo.

Not sure if this should go in the build or CPU forum... trying it here for now.

I've been thinking of upgrading(if it's worth it) my E8500/750i FTW lately, more then once.

No1 Question, would I see a big increase in FPS in games? This is on a GTX260c216. I plan on upgrading the video card this autumn once the first revisions of Fermi are out(I am not an early adopter kinda guy) and the 58XX series have matured also. No SLI or Crossfire for me anymore.

If I wont see much of an increase in games, would my E8500@3.7ghz be bottlenecked by the newer cards(Fermi/58XX) later on or the CPU is not the bottleneck of my system?

For +-400$. Gaming only, slight overclock, nothing extreme by any means. Prices are approximate of what I found quickly shopping. I'll need a new CPU cooler also, TDB later on.

Option A:
AMD 955 Black Edition(180$)
Asus or Gigabyte mobo(around 100$ for a mATX, whatever is on special or the nice to have)
4gb G.skill or Mushkin ram (around 110$ or a little more for mushkin)

Option B:
i5-750(210$)
Gigabyte or Asus mobo(around 100$ for a mATX, whatever is on special or the nice to have)
4gb G.skill or Mushkin ram (around 110$ or a little more for mushkin)

Thanks for any advise.

I guess it's up to your brand loyalty. I know the i5 may "kill" the Phenom, but you can save a few dollars with AMD. You can get a decent AM3 board for about $75 these days, and the 955 can get had for $175 at times. I also like the AM3 heatsink mounting system better, and I find that some of the motherboards have unique layouts and sometimes better features. If you don't want SLI then you won't miss the Intel board, right?

And +1 to Kovok.
;)

My 2 cents now:

If you want to play game, only game and want a cheap upgrade but that will last, the phenom II x3 is still a really good bang for the buck. I got one right now and it play every game smooth, on full details (Yes I got a 1680 X 1050 and a 4830, witch we will agree is not a powerful videocard!).

There is not need for the quad core in game, 2 good core will do the job and you could easily go with the phenom II x2 550 and maybe lucky in unlocking core witch offer great value too.

On the other hand, you could go with and intel platform if you really want the quad core. At this price point Intel go it all the way. Below 4 core, personally you will pay for an IGP that you won't use... I personally don't like the idea to pay for something that you won't use.

Right now, CPU doesn't made anymore the total as it was before for game, now it is primary the graphic card that does it all. I see athlon II quad core running on a 5770 and it run fine. Yes you won't have all the punch that Intel have, but you will pay less for it.

It's all about need, and budget. Some prefer to have the reactivity of an Intel on a daily basis. Some other prefer to put the money on the part they really need to got the perfect result.

TO help you made your choice you could have a look here:

it is not perfect but give a good idea!

If your going AMD i suggest the following as a stepping stone..

Giga 785G $75
AMD PH II X4 925 $150 (overclock it to 3.6)
Ram of your choice $110

Or make that E8500 of yours scream. (somewhere in the 4.2ghz should do)

Yeah, make the E8500 scream. Then silence it with more voltage!

I'd go with the i5 because good AM3 chipsets don't support SLI (and if you're planning Fermi that's big). That said, at the moment I can't see you getting huge performance boosts in most games due to the switch, at least not with that GTX 260. Once you go Fermi or 58xx it may be worth upgrading, but again, by that time there could easily be bigger and better things available (or the same things at a lower price).
