Default Advice on CPU cooler

I have a system in a small case, and would like to replace the CPU cooler. The problem is that the stock cooler is noisy. This system will be running some video software in the near future, so some extra CPU cooling might also be a good idea.

The catch is that space is limited. This is a Lian-Li small tower case, with the power supply sitting directly over the CPU. There is about 3 3/4" space from the surface of the motherboard to the bottom of the power supply. Or less - that side of the power supply has a 120mm fan, so there is likely a grill over the fan that stick out a little more, maybe 1/16" to 2/32".

The motherboard is an Intel D865GBF, socket 478.

Can anyone suggestion a CPU cooler that will fit into such a situation?

Thanks!

Easy one. Zalman 7500 series or 7700 series. 7700 is wider than the 7500. I think they're both the same height.

7700:
NCIX.com - Buy Zalman CNPS7700-CU LGA775 S478 S754 S939 S940 Copper 1000-2000RPM 20-32DBA CPU Heatsink Fan - CNPS7700-CU In Canada.

Thanks! Those Zalman units look interesting, and appear to be the right size.

Are Zalman products dependable? I am not familiar with the brand name.

Very. I've got a 4 year old 7000-Cu still spinning with 24/7 usage. (Router) If the full speed fan is too loud for your liking, you can use the little fan controller thing that comes with it to tune it down. (I think they still come with it)

Just had a look, and there is a semi-tall heat sink beside the CPU, for the Intel 82865G (GMCH). This may be an issue - the Zalman 7700 is huge. I am thinking the 7500, in aluminum.....maybe....

I like copper. The full copper ones may be heavy and so damned good at cooling.

The Zalman CNPS7500 CPU cooler arrived this morning.

Unfortunately, the package seems to be missing a pair of Clip Supports specified in the instructions as required for Socket 478 CPUs, which is what I will be using it on.

The package is also lacking the backplate for Socket 775 motherboards. It has the Clip Support for Socket 775, but that was kicking around loose in the package. I would have expected it to be packaged somehow - the rest of the bits and pieces where in an unsealed baggie.

Guess it will be a few days before I can get this installed.....rather untypical of products purchased from NCIX. Never had anything misisng from a shipment from them before.

As far as I can tell, by the information on the Zalman web site and the bits and pieces included in the package, Zalman has removed socket 478 support from the 7500 series CPU cooler.

Which means I have to RMA it to NCIX. I hope they understand that this was purchased based on the fact that their web site still states that the unit supports 478 CPUs!

The search continues......
