Default Is this possible: nvidia and ATI gpu simultaneously

Hey all,

I was wondering if it is possible to use an ATI vid card as the primary one, and keep a 9800GT in a secondary slot purely for folding purposes? The motherboard in question is the Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P. I'm kind of worried about driver conflicts, possibly a reduction in gaming performance?

I apologize if this has been asked before, searching the forum with "nvidia and ati" yields a crap-load of results :)

Thanks in advance.

P.S. the 9800GT is a bloody great folder!!!! Already ~350th position on the team :)

I HIGHLY doubt it will work, but in the interest of science, if you have the hardware handy, give it a shot and report back !

Windows 7 and winxp will allow you to install 2 different GPU drivers without a problem , dont see why you couldnt fold with one GPU while using the other.

I don't like the idea of 2 different GPU driver in the same PC. It can only bring problem....

Unfortunately, I only have the 9800gt, I have yet to buy the mobo (debating whether I should wait for 890gx) and the other gpu. I was thinking of getting a 5850, or maybe another used nvidia gpu from the BST forum here.

I agree, Markone, having two different gpu drivers installed makes my skin crawl.

Could you use the second graphics card in a virtual machine for folding?

XP and Win7 should work fine.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Should be running 7 on the new machine once I get it.

I don't believe you can fold on GPUs from within a virtual machine. The latest version of VMWare Workstation does support hardware video acceleration, but I don't think anyone has tested it with folding. And any VM software that does not support hardware acceleration will certainly not be able to do it.

I do think it is possible. Not sure what you need to do though.

One of the staff here uses his onboard ATi GPU for his day to day stuff and a GX2 for folding and its run good so far.
