Default My Next Build.

As you all know I have decided to upgrade and jump camps from AMD to Intel. This project was going to be a $300 Overclocker but I have decided to put a bit more money into it.

Motherboard: Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP - $171.72
Processor: Intel C2D E4500 - $156.00
Memory: Mushkin HP2 PC2-6400 DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 - $89.99 - bought
CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 7 - $21.47
Memory Cooler: OCZ Active Memory Cooler - $19.01
Optical Drive: LG 18X Dual Layer DVD±RW SATA - $32.40

I am unsure of the PSU. Let me know if there is a better for around the same price.
Power Supply: OCZ Stealth Xtreme 600 Watt - $68.65

Total: $559.24

Parts I already have:
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon X1600 XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200rpm SATAII
Case: Raidmax Xforce Mid Tower
Cooling: 2x120mm and 1x80mm Antec TriCool

My System Specs

Default

Is the OCZ mem cooler being purchase mainly for form or function?

It sure looks cool (pun intended), but I haven't been able to see any verifiable improvement on mem OC with it installed vice no mem cooler installed.

To top it off, I've found that it doesn't always play nice in the sandbox with longer video cards (I had to remove one of the thumbscrews to allow for installation of my 1950 pro on the DQ6 board), and I'm sure that Patriote might have a few words to say about its electrical conductive properties......

If it's for looks then fine, it looks great!!!... if it's for function, you would probably be better served with one of the antec spot fans.

I guess I don't really need it if I don't intend to overclock the RAM. My goal is to overclock the CPU to 3.6

I have a few of those psu's that I got through rma's on a couple of my older 420 powerstreams.

I use them to run my oc'ed quads on dedicated folding rigs so the rigs are pretty barebones ... they only have 1 hdd, a very lowend pci video card, 1 hdd, and a few fans.

They don't seem to have any problems suppling the juice to my quads which are running 3.0 - 3.3 ghz with <= 1.4V on each.

One has been running ~ 2 months 724.

I'm only going to have one hard drive and the X1600 XT doesn't require a whole lot of power.

CPU=Core 2 Q6600
Motherboard=Undecided leaning towards DS3L (DS3R if I do RAID)
RAM=PC26400 4GB
2nd harddrvie=160-200gb (might RAID with 1st hdd)

More of a wishlist than anything. once i get the go ahead AMD might have their quad's out (desktop ones) and we'll see what happens.

DON'T BUY THE OCZ RAM COOLER! It ain't well built at all. The fan will probably start to become noisy as hell in a month or 2 of utilization and you'll want to remove it because you can't support the noise anymore and also because the vibrations it produce are going to make you angry.... So you'll remove it and accidentally you are going to touch your 8800GTS with the bottom of the cooler, you'll short it and it'll be dead.

Seriously, the cooler might look good but it's just a piece junk.

Ditch the memory cooler as they aren't needed if you got good case ventilation and your memory doesn't run hot (it shouldn't).

Depending on how much overclocking you plan to do that AC Freezer may not be adequate enough to keep the chip cool.

I'd swap the LG optical for a Pioneer.

Powersupply should be fine.

I take it this is an experience you had.

I'll save the money and ditch that cooler, maybe I add the $20 for another CPU HSF. Any recomendations?

Depending if it fits I will probably get the Scythe Ninja Plus Rev. B - $35.73 at Direct Canada.
