Thumbs down Gigabyte QC issues - DS3R boards

Purchased a DS3R rev 1.0 on Monday, did setup with Q6600 (SLACR), 4 GB Mushkin EM2-6400, etc. Board would not post, found one bad memory stick. Tried again with 2 sticks, posted however there were issues with the CPU fan Freezer Pro 7(PWM) not starting up, had to switch it to another fan connector to get it to work properly. The speed on the fan appeared to cycle up and down, causing a "moaning" sound. Got into bios, deselected auto fan control, then the cpu fan would work on the proper connector, however speed cycling issue continued. The bios did not support floppy drive, making things difficult on loading OS. To shorten the story, returned mobo and memory to retailer and exchanged them for a P5K-E/WIFI-AP and 4 sticks of Ballistix. Now everything works great, and no speed cycling on the CPU fan. Retailer tested remaining stock on the DS3R (3), and found them all to be defective.

This surprised me, as in the past I have had good luck with Gigabyte boards, however it would appear that they have a QC issue, at least with the rev 1.0 boards.

Thanks for the info, we'll have to keep our eyes open for more of these reports as the two lower end P35 giga boards seem to be such a good choice for budget OC builds.

Sounds like a batch of bad boards, hopefully it's a one-of and doesn't affect the whole line.

Welcome to the forums BTW!!!!

My gigabyte p35's have been fine: 1 x ds3r, 2 x ds3l, 1 x g33m-ds2r all running quads.

I have seven p35-ds3's 6 x rev 3.3's with quads, 1 x rev 1 with an e6600.

No problems so far with any of the above.

Haven't had very good experience with asus boards lately tho ... not doa but premature deaths on a p5w64 and p5b-d after 6-8 months.

Sounds like there was a bad batch, or maybe more likely, bad handling of that retailers giga mobos.

Default Further to the DS3R QA/QC question

I did extensive online research on this issue with the DS3R boards, a lot of people seem to have had good luck, many other have had similar problems to the ones I encountered, although many of them did not manifest themselves until a few weeks or longer after the build, notably cold boot issues. Not limited to rev 1.0, and also seems to involve the combo board as well. I do think that possibly they also have some bios issues with these boards, as the Gigabyte forum rep keeps advising people to flash back to F2 or F3 bios, although this can be difficult when you can't get the board to post.

I agree that Asus seems to have slipped on their QA/QC on some of their more recent products, my A8R32MVP being an illustration of that, I have encountered some issues with it, although nothing I couldn't work around.
