Default Silent-Pipe - newbie

Silent Pipe

Whats up with this hybrid Silent-Pipe2 on my Ex58 Extreme Gigabyte motherboard?

It says thermal, but right under that, in the user manual, it starts going off about water cooling. Is this a system I can only use with water cooling, and should exclude the silent pipe until im ready for water cooling?

Or is it needed even if I'm running on air?

I understand it's used for cooling the north and south bridge.

I could use a little heads up.

Hello!

My name is Caesar and I'm posting in Thunder Bay ON

I'm finally building my own rig! I've bought computers before, but here now, I am building a rig!
Just rocking an i7 920 with some Trichannel Gskills on a eX58-Extreme gbite mobo! I plan to learn some more and sometime develop a water cooling system, and a light show!

The chipset cooler can be run in a water-cooling loop, if you want. It can also be used without water-cooling, by just leaving it and running it as it stands. The basic included chipset cooler contains a heat-pipe..connected to the VRM/MOSFET sinks, so it can cool the chipset on it's own. The "extra" silent-pipe crappola isn't necessary, and just adds bulk and complexity to your cpu-socket area. I would leave the "baggage" off. GL

It's useless. Yes, it will cool your northbridge better, but it's really unnecessary and just adds extra bulk/is a pain in the ass to deal with.

I'm glad you guys came around. Thanks again for the info. I did install the system though, as I thought it was cool.
