For the price the 9950 is going for new, around $150, it really isn't worth it IMO. Unless you can find one used for under $100, I wouldn't bother.

You can grab the Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 and Phenom II X3 720BE for $251.25 which would be a far better choice. And you could most likely reuse everything you have. So if you have $180, continue saving up another $100 and just do it right.

I would need DDR3 for the board but still, it's a good plan. I don't need a complete new system. I would want a new video card at some point, but I think the bump in CPU and RAM would do some good to prolong a new GPU.

I just priced a new 720, that board, 4GB of PC3-12800 RAM (would like to have headroom), and a new Coolermatser Scout case (I do want to keep my old parts in a case), at my local PC store (Canada Computers) and after tax it came to $585.29 which is pretty reasonable. I should be able to do that in 2-3 months if my hours at work hold steady or increase.

That's a DDR2 board. Moving to DDR3 has very minimal benefits right now IMO. You don't have to use DDR3 to use Phenom II CPUs.

Though I suppose if you can afford DDR3 RAM, since it has drop a ton in price, then it's not bad to get it. Then you'd want this motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P. Note the "T" after 770 means it's DDR3.

That's actually the board that I was looking at. I thought the user I was quoting was mistaken. Yeah I would go DDR3 for future proof reasons, and I would go with the DDR3-1600 because it is cheap enough.

consider the X2 6400 the best proc your board can handle. I dropped a 9950 in my rig and it felt like a down-grade when gaming.. i actually LOST FPS.

One cool thing i did like about the 9950 vs the 6400 was ALT+TAB 'ing between games and windows desktop was WAY crisper on the phenom.

That would be because multitasking likes the 4 cores, where as games don't use 4 cores so it prefers the higher clocked dual-core.
