IMHO, the clock speeds of processors are starting to be maxed out (no major jumps above 3Ghz or so stock speeds in a few years) so I think the future will lie in multiple threads, which means mulitple cores. My vote would go to the Q9550.

Alright, i was leaning towards to Q9550 as well since it seems to be far more future proof.

2 years? Then I'd say get the E8400, you'll be able to push it higher anyways.

The Q9550 at or above 3.6GHz is a monster and with more games starting to utilize multcores I think it would be a wiser investment.

I had no qualms about paying a premium for mine almost a year ago.

I vote for the q9550 - I have one and run it at 3.4ghz, but I've had it up to 3.8ghz and 4.0ghz pretty easily

I suspect we're getting pretty close to the same time frame on the dual vrs quad discussion as we were with high clockspeed single vrs dual back at the end of 2006. By mid 2007 dual core chips were blowing the doors off of single cores for 95% of apps.

Not only are more apps being written to take advantage of extra cores, we seem to be doing a lot more multi-tasking these days.

I'd vote for quad core, especially if you don't plan on upgrading for at least 2 years.
