Yeah I agree with enab, very very few programs and games are really set up to utilize multi threading, and not many games slated to come down the tubes this year will support it either. I agree eventually mutli threading will easilly take over the market but I dont forsee it within the life span of either of these CPUs. With the release of 6 and 8 core CPUs and soon even faster multi cores I think by the time the real battle for mutli core supremacy ensues both the Q9550 and the E8400 will be severly out matched.
The reason im thinking about going quad is video encoding and converting, I convert TONs of movies everyday, and the extra cores could cut my encoding times almost in half which would be really awesome, other then that though, maybe a boost in benchmarks would be nice, but thats about it. I multi task quite a bit with my E8400 and even at 3.6ghz I have yet to slow it down, and that includes burning dvds while gaming ;)
As for the 790i motherboards, the digital PWM which I am using actually overclocks quads very well, my issue has been faulty power circutry and missmatched low quality 4x1 ram moduals =( Other wise they are amazingly well laid out and set up motherboards with a huge amount of bios versatility. Alot of people have been getting their Q9550s to 4.2ghz and above with these boards, with the ability to tune the GTL voltages and having much more stable high voltage circutry.
