Unhappy 790FX vs 790GX?

so I'm a novice at AMD builds, and I want to build a AMD based gaming computer in the summer time based on the Phenom II platform....but I still don't quite know what the difference is between 790FX and 790GX.

here's what will probably be going in to this computer:
CPU:Phenom II x4 940 (is it really worth the extra 80 bucks to go for the 955?)
Mobo: Unknown?
GPU: 2x4890
RAM:Unknown?

HALP plz

If youre going for 2x 4890s in crossfire, then you should take a motherboard with a 790fX chipset. The 790gx pushes crossfire configurations down two 8x/8x rather than the 790fx's 16x/16x. For a manufacturer, id suggest Gigabyte.

I would go with the FX as well. For crossfire mode, it faster and overall it a faster board then the GX, it's also easier to overclock. Be careful if you buy a AM3 motherboard as it only works with AM3 CPU. The AMD Phenom II X4 940, is a AM+ CPU.

Have a look at the Gigabyte site for the CPU support list for a AM3 motherboard:
GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List - GA-MA790FXT-UD5P (rev. 1.0)

Once you decide of the motherboard, have a look at the CPU support on the vendor site so you don't get a bad surprise.

i just wanted to quickly ask without having to make a new topic

i understand that if u plan to go crossfire, a FX mobo would be best, however what if I intend to use a single card (4870x2), should I still get a FX mobo or would a GX (some reason gigabyte only has 790X.. no G!) be sufficient?

Check the chipset on the gigabyte board to be sure.

As for the xfire question: The single card wont be hampered by either FX or GX, as the GX runs single cards in 16x mode. Its only when you 2-card that it drops to 8x8x.

Its been proven that the bandwith on the 48xx and 2xx cards is NOT bandwith limited even in 8x8x mode. I'll try to dig up the test I saw. I think it was on OC.

if your gonna go single card and want cheap.

go for the Newegg.ca - GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

i been reading a lot of amd lately, most of there cpus don't extreme boards to get a decent overclock.

which cpu your gonna use?

but for best $ amd board i would go for a asus 790gx or gigabyte 790x, both of these are in the $120 CAD range but thats just my though since i have a set of DDR2 sitting here

Would the 790GX mobo be ok for the single gpu 4870x2? Or do I have to go for a FX board to reap the max benefits?
