My System Specs

Default Need Help Choosing Computer Upgrade Components

Currently i have:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 at 2.13GHz
Asus P5B
2 x 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 OCZ RAM
8800 GTS nVidia 640MB
320GB Seagate 7200 RPM SATA HDD
750W brand new RocketFish Power Supply
5 Year old Falling apart Thermaltake case
PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
2 DVD DL SATA optical Drives
64 Bit OEM Windows Vista Business

Current computer issues, prior to computer moved into parent's basement, sound would stutter/skip whenever played through mobo's audio card or through sound cards. Even though OS recognizes 4 gigs of ram, both paging and mobo recognize only 3 gigs.

Tests performed and passed: MemTest86 and Prime95

I would like to spend as little as possible as everyone does, i've been thinking of potentially going with the Q9550 for the processor (its around 310$ Canadian), but don't know about the rest of the components that i may need to replace.

Core 2 Quad
Processor: Core 2 Quad Q9550 https://www.pcczone.com/intelr-coret...0569q9550.html ($309.99)

vs
i7
Processor: Intel Core I7 920 2.66GHz https://www.pcczone.com/intel-core-i...rocessors.html ($321.95)

Difference of $11.96

Motherboards i'm not quite sure of yet

Core 2 Quad
RAM: 2 x 2 GB OCZ 800 MHz RAM ($0.00 already owned in use with dying system)

i7
RAM: OCZ Gold OCZ3G1600LV6GK 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL 8-8-8-24 Triple Channel Memory Kit http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ustomerReviews ($99.99 excluding mail in rebate)

Difference of: $99.99 ($79.99 when mail in rebate arrives)

Graphics card is the same: EVGA 896-P3-1255-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...VGA-_-14130434 ($209.99 excluding mail in rebate)

Power Supply: 750W already owned

Hard Drive: Seagate 320GB 7200RPM already owned

Case: Antec 900 or Antec 300 (haven't decided yet) ($63.99 for Antec 300 or $109.98 for Antec 900)

Core 2 Quad Total: $629.96 (price is with Antec 900 and without rebates)
i7 Total: $741.91 (price is with Antec 900 and without rebates)
Difference: $111.95 (though probably $100 more in diference with motherboard)

I think it may be worth it to go with the i7 since it'll mean easier upgrades later on but i'm not completely sure.

I would go to the I7 if I was "upgrading" and go with Q9xxx if I wanted to "hold the line". Prices have however come down quite a bit on I7 mobos so that looks tempting

Why does it say on the ncix webite say its ATI Crossfire, yet the Asus webpage says it does both ATI Crossfire and nVidia SLI? (since i'm looking for a board that supports nVidia SLI)
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

This one i think is a good alternative to the one you suggested.

The P6T SE is only Crossfire, no SLI.

The P6T supports both.

Go to I7, get a Gigabytes EX58-UD5, about the same price and much more feature than the P6T, with 6GB of G.skill you 1600 you can't get better, you can keep your video card for now she is actually realy good and can last 1 more year before get changed. I sugest to change the PSU by the way...rocketfish is the Bestbuy / futureshop brand name and for working there for over a years...they just suck:) Also get the three hundred for case, nine is cool only if you like led in other case get the three and put 2 good noctua 120mm or Yate Loon 120 MM in the front panel and you have a great car ;).

I like the price point in canada with the UD4P, with my current graphics card, the problem is i have lower performance, leading me to believe there may be some issues with it, though i could always replace that one last to see how it performs in the new hardware. And with the powersupply, you'd be surprised, the one i picked up actually got a very good reviews online and i bought it when i still worked there and got a discount on it.

Rocketfish PSU?????????

Ummmm that would be the First thing I would change.
Upgrading anything is pointless if your PSU is going to Deep Six your Rig.
