It would bottleneck it- how much would depend on the program of course, but you would definitely see an improvement. If you're planning on upgrading to a new chipset in the near future, it might be worth going for it, but if you planning on sticking with 939 for some time, you might be better off upgrading your GPU then, depending on how good your current one is- what are you using now?

Well I have a BFG 7950GTOC which is good enough on XP but im thinking of upgrading to VISTA and a solid Dx10 card soon, I was hoping the 939 asus a8n32-SLI and opteron 165 wouldnt hold the 8800GTS up too much. oh well, magictorch

Personally, I would stick with the card (and OS) you had until you were ready for a platform upgrade, but other people might disagree.

I'm not sure how much of a bottleneck you would see, but you'd end up needing a high end card down the line with or without a full system upgrade, so any gain would still be a gain.

whether to upgrade the card depends on a few things. the games you play, the monitor you have, and your future upgrade plans. if you play primarily cpu limited games like css on a 19inch lcd at 1280x1024 then no, don't upgrade. if you play stalker on a 24inch lcd then an 8800 is a definite. i actually just picked up a 8800gtx because i have a 24inch lcd and want to play the new colin mcrae dirt at 1920x1200 with all the eye candy turned on. my x1950xtx couldn't handle it.

ok thanks for the help guys..this forum is very helpful! im actually just assembling the parts ive sourced at the moment and switching the GPU from my other machine. hopefully it will all work and i get the opteron to around 2.4. Ill see how it holds up with some of the titles this summer and make changes as needed. cheers.

oh forgot to say i use quite a high resolution although things seem to work well enough with the 7950Gt at the moment..only tried FEAR and halflife 2 though with high settings...my athlon 3200 seems to get very hot though in my crappy emachines so ive decided to build a better system using all the 939 leftovers floating about. The 8800 should make a huge difference with the more recent games.
