That is only one reason that FireWire totally kicks the crap out of USB. If you actually compare all the features and specs of FireWire and USB you will notice that FireWire is completely awesome.
Sadly, now with eSATA most people will dump FireWire(IEEE 1394) in favour of eSATA and USB.(they will not give up USB for a long time to come even though it is total shit for anything but keyboards, mice, and other controlling/monitoring devices)

Having said that, I like USB for keyboards and mice, just not any significant data transfer.

I'm not sure what the experience on the apple platform was like in earlier days, but firewire applications on the intel platform were plagued by crappy controller chipsets which couldn't transfer files reliably, and in fact often ended up trashing data. (Write Delay errors/failure)

I tried one of the earlier USB/Firewire external HDD enclosures with the initial plan of using it to serve up media files (mostly MP3) via Firewire to take advantage of faster transfer speeds, but it was a totally frustrating experience which pretty well turned me off of firewire for good.

Must have been the mobo manus cheaping out then because I have been loving and using FireWire for years. My newest PowerMac mobo right now was actually introduced in Jan 2001 and even the earlier hardware I have(that has onboard FireWire) has not given me trouble when it comes to FireWire. FireWire on Macs is great and I never could understand why PCs rarely had it.

Never tell me that it is an issue of paying royalties, mobo manus could just up the mobo price by a couple dollars to begin with and _nobody_ would notice. Seriously.

If the firewire WAS plugged into a USB header , it will absolutely cause sparks/fire/semiconductor death. That's totally what I thought of too.....

Nope it wasn't. I have learned about that before and fried my iPod on one of my first builds. (Best Buy's people replaced it )

Anyways for firewire it is keyed to only fit one way in on a mobo 1394 socket.

How is this possible if it burnt out 2 mobos? Correct me if im wrong but I doubt it would be like that on 2 different mobos.
