Hyper-Threading

I have a question about HT on my i7..

Right now I have it turned off for my overclock to 3.8GHz, I have not tried it with HT on to see if it's stable or not... I just turned it off because I read it's easier to OC with it off or so I've read, although I see some nice OC with it on.

I'm wondering, is there really a noticeable performance improvement with it on?
With it off, I have 4 threads, and my G15 displays each core's CPU usage with it's own bar, and it has room for 4 cores.. if I turn HT on, it doesn't show each single core (because it has 8 threads... only has room to show 4 of them) so it shows a solid line as if I had a single core chip, lame!.

So is the performance difference like... vast? Or what? I keep it off for that reason.. I like to see each core's CPU usage, helps me know if things are working properly..

Should it be on? What do y'all think?

Its worth it, turn it on! Frankly at 3.8GHz the i7 won't even sneeze with HT on, that's a fairly tame OC. While in *most* games you won't notice a diffrence, the resulting performance boost you'd have overall in other applicstions is worth it.

Let me put it this way, you don't LOSE(only negligible if any at all) performance by enabling HT, and your stability should remain. Theres really little reason to leave it off, your just cutting yourself short over something as silly as how they display on a G15 LCD monitor? Please!

Yeah that and I read somewhere it's easier to get a stable OC with it off, however that seems to be less true...

I turned it on earlier and ran 4 instances of orthos.. one of them stopped itself with some error, so i switched screens to see it, and then I must've got a blue screen when i was doing that because my PC reset although I didn't see blue since I was switching to analog mode lol..

Maybe I'll try it again.. is there a plugin for the G15 that will show 8 threads of CPU usage?

What voltage you running? Maybe you just need a tad more, the Core i7's should be good for 1.35-1.4v for 24/7 operation.

I was at 1.24 and I put it to 1.25 and turned on HT..

My temps went up 10 degrees.. and I got a black screen restart after 5 mins of orthos (not a blue screen?) Temps are going to start to suck ass if I pump closer to 1.3v into it.



Only thing I can think of that will benefit from 4 more threads is dvd encoding?
