Talking Tales from the DARK side

Finally got my DFI 965-S DARK installed and running.

Just going to jot down some of my impressions for folks who might be trying to decide between the DS-3 and the 965-S.

Been playing all of 3 hours with this beast and I'm already in love!!! :)

No crazy OC yet, CPU, Mem, & Mobo are all unknown qualities to me so I'm going to take it up slow to see where I hit bottlenecks.

So far it's hit 3G without breaking a sweat, I bumped the vcore up .025 just on spec (will play with lowering it after I find a max OC).

Load temps are 37/36 (15 min orthos) Idle shows 19/16.

Are all DDRII boards completely lacking in real mem dividers? I can see where a person would want to drop a lot of coin on memory which will hit 1000 easy. 800 that didn't want to OC it would severly limit CPU OC possibilites.

Heh......

I'm up to 3400 (+ .050V) and it seems to be stable, but I'm eyeing the DDR freq (currently 851 @ 2V) with trepidation..... It's rated for 4-4-3-8 so we'll see how high it'll go with 5s across the board.

Heh.... what's considered a safe overvolt for these things?

On the A64s once you got over a certain point (minds getting fuzzy on that... :) ) there was a real concern of physical damage to the internal pathways.

I just bumped it up to +.065 as orthos gacked after 5 min.

For some strange reason TAT refuses to work with this board.... going to have to do some research.

On water, I don't worry at all about giving my e6400 1.65V (sometimes 1.7 for the suicide runs)- I definately wouldn't run 24/7 on that, but some people do.

Heh.... I might try some high volts just to see where it gets to, but if I can run between 3400 - 3600 @ 1.4 I'll probably be happy with that for now. :)

I'm seriously thinking of opening a consultant business for folks who are planning on purchasing new computer hardware. I'll sell a peek into what gear I'm planning on purchasing in the near future, and armed with that knowledge, people will be able to time their purchases for about 1 week after I pick up mine.

I paid $200 for the supertalent PC6400 I'm running and that was a fine price 1 month ago when I picked it up (may 4'th to be exact).

No sooner did I fork out the coin than just like the E6420, prices dropped to unheard of lows on PC8000/8500.

I'm telling ya, I can't win!!! :)

Heh... I picked up 2x1Gb OCZ Flex XLC CL3 on May 3rd for $247 and I was also crying a week later when RAM droped in price like a rock... although I would have bought Firestix or some OCZ Platinum at the reduced prices it seems that my XLC RAM has actually gone up in price since then = go figure...
