EVGA X58 SLI Review Comment Thread
Sorry it took so long guys but we finally posted the EVGA X58 SLI review today. This board has been an absolute blast to work with and really held up under some intense stress. We covered a few interesting topics in the testing including PWM cooling and 16X/16X SLI VS 8X/8X SLI with some relatively conclusive results for our test setup. Here is a link to the review...

Please don't hesitate to post any comments, thoughts, concerns, or questions here in this thread. I have this setup crunching WCG/FAH with a single GTX 280 by day and benching under LN2 and all kinds of configurations by night. Just ask what you want to see and I will do my best to accomodate.

I will be using this thread as a sort of 'blog of results' with this board as I continue to benchmark with it so don't forget to check in once in a while. Here is one benchmark result that just missed the deadline for posting in the review...

I finally managed 30K 06, and with only two cards...its a shame Vantage drops the score so much otherwise three cards would be quite impressive at these clocks.

Hmm... I might have to return my TRUE, since I got this board, and it doesn't seem like it'll fit. I'll be putting it 90 degrees different from what you have, since I have the MM H2GO and that orientation would be best.

But can you confirm if it'll fit or not? Thanks.

3oh6 January 6, 2009 11:50 PM

oh shoot...where did that section go?!?! i did a very exhaustive section on hardware installation and focused on the TRUE installation in both orientations. looks like we need a quick edit as the whole section missed the boat. well, here are a couple highlights with what i think is your desired oreintation...

i am terribly sorry about that buddy, we goofed up. Michael won't be up until the morning so the review won't be updated until then so wait for the whole section to come up with my comments but i hope the photos tide you over until then.

Ahh, thanks for the pictures. I was a little worried there when I saw the other orientation and it didn't seem like there was enough room. Anyways, excellent review, other than the fact that that was left out.. :thumb:

no problem and sorry again for the mistake...looks like it was all my fault

the above orientation fits fine but it is snug up against the PWM heat sink. you just have to make sure all the fins are sitting as far down as they go and take a bit of care during installation of the fan and housing. in the photos you can see it puts the slightest bit of pressure on the top fin of the PWM heat sink.

Now that was an interesting read, thank you. I'm thinking of upgrading in late spring and would automatically have gone for another Asus but your review just might sway my thinking, if they can get the bios fully stable mmm...
Have you ever checked what that beast could do for SMP Folding ??. Don't forget to add a link to the comment thread from the end of the review...

Excellent review. Actually read it an hour or two ago, looks like I hit the front page at exactly the right moment. Fortunately, I jotted down a few points to ask/mention when this thread finally was put up.

Honestly, as nice as the standard benching and stuff is, it's less-common stuff like that PWM fan cooling testing or the PCI-E lane testing that really make it shine. Silly little questions, but without actual testing, there's nothing more than a bunch of theories and opinions being tossed back and forth.

Nothing should be able to damage this package on its way to you, not even UPS.

Typo on core speed? And is that really the memory clock? Wow. Golden memory chips there.

Interesting on the results for the PWM cooler. Especially when the Sekisui fell short of the stock tape. Is the Sekisui unusually thin, that couldn't conform to the irregular surfaces of the circuits? Or if the Evga stuff just that much better? Also interesting how the units are apparently rated for a much higher frequency than offered. Wonder if they might allow a 1200Khz option in the future? Hot as hell, but it might offer that extra little edge.

Evga E-Leet: You can adjust the other stuff, does the software allow for adjustment of memory timings/subtimings?

NB cooler: Any comparison for noise? Say, compared to a 800rpm 120mm fan, or something similar?

What an excellent review on the board, covered A to Z.. Very nice and neat packing by eVGA.. Wow..

Just ordered a few days ago an EVGA X58, 12GB Cosair Dominator, and the ultra-120. Is there any way to position the ultra-120 so you can get the full 12GB of ram in?

Hmmm...this should be a good read.

I am able to get to 191 x 21 stable so far on bios SZ1C. I'm looking forward to seeing your results, Jody!
